England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Indus Silver

When I originally put the link up it was via my ipad (and as you said, it gave a mobile link). This time I did it via the laptop.

I got my camera installed today and all the wires tidied away quite nicely. The camera is one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...0515639675

Although the pics on eBay show it with a suction mount it also comes with a stick-on mount which is much smaller, and whilst not exactly invisible it's not intrusive either. I'd already wired a satnav in to a socket installed behind the glovebox and powered from the footwell fusebox, so I simply added a socket doubler to power the camera from the same supply. The cable runs invisibly behind the rubber door surround then behind the headlining across the top of the windscreen.

This DVR comes with a second camera which I've mounted at the top of the rear window. The cable for this one runs behind the rubber trim across the tops of the front and rear doors and behind the trims on the pillars between the two doors, and between the rear door and the rear side window.

The hardest part of the entire install was running the cable the final part of the way to the camera. It runs above the headlining, up through an existing hole into the roof itself, then up through the left-hand 'concertina' into the door. (Left-hand because it seems to have less in it than the right.) This was fiddly, but achievable with patience. The section of trim across the rear door was removed to run the last bit of cable - this was the only piece of trim which I needed to remove - elsewhere cables were just eased behind the trim in situ.

From the outside you wouldn't notice the cameras unless you were looking for them:

Image quality is reasonable - the front camera is 720p HD and pretty sharp, the only issue being that one can sometimes see blocky compression effects in the saved files. The rear camera is lower resolution, but adequate.

I went for this DVR because I liked the remote rear camera recording to the same device. Only time will tell whether it's reliable, but so far it seems pretty good for what it cost.

Samples of video from both front and rear cameras in a variety of situations are in the following links. N.B. Rear camera needs adjusted down a bit, and the noise which sounds like the gears being crunched isn't! I think it was the wiper blade squeaking against the screen, but I'm not sure.

Rear:

You may need to download the videos to see them properly - the Dropbox player isn't giving the same quality for me.

That's cool! Can you stop start the video manually?
Does it record via SD card? If not, how long does it record for?

Video can be stopped and started manually, and audio can be turned off too if you don't want to be overheard! This is either via buttons on the dvr, or via a remote control.

It uses a mini SD card, not supplied. I've got a 16Gb in.

Cheers. How long would 16gb last with only front camera recording do you think?

DrRpb - A 5 minute file seems to average around 200Mb, so say 2.5Gb per hour of thereabouts. This based on a 20-minute test run. I'll know better when I've used it some more.

wizking - Thanks for your input - saved me taking the trim off the A pillar, which was my original intention.

ad210358 - NOW you tell me! Smile Although for my purposes I'm really not that bothered about GPS.

bish789 - I know what you mean! One also has to be aware that conversations with passengers, or phone calls, might be recorded.

True Pab, even though I am one of the best drivers in the world(in my own mind), it would't be good to record "S Censored t I didn't see him"

Pab. The quality looks good, but I would angle the front camera down slightly too.
At the moment the horizon is around the middle of the frame, you could do with making it around 80% up from the bottom of the frame.
The sky is pretty well exposed, but the ground is about a stop or more under exposed, which would only get worse on a bright sunny day, or at night when the street lights are on. If you adjust the position so mostly the ground is filling the frame, the sky would be over exposed, brightening the foreground, which is after all the important part of the frame. Off course that would require most of the bonnet to be in view, but it's a more natural view. Thumbs Up
