Well
Not wheel bearings so the conclusion is that it is in fact the rear diff 
I was expecting a whine but my friendly mechanic says bearing noise.

Hi
Tyres just moved from front to back- no difference. Tyres are in balance so now I will have to go to step 2. Tomorrow night on a 2 post lift to check wheel bearings etc.
