Another unexplained noise

Hi
My 2010 HSE td4 manual is causing me some concerns. I have owned it now for something like 18 months of fault free motoring. just coming up to 85000 miles FSH.

I am getting a sound which is starts at 25-30 mph (town driving) and builds with road speed and becomes less noticeable 50-70mph. The sound is there in gear or freewheeling and varies with the speed. I would describe it as a wub wub wub sound quite loud and very wearing! It is coming from the rear of the car (I think)

Looking on this forum many have described bearing noise building but everyone says it gets worse at speed and constant, mine does but then is not noticeable as much the faster you go (i.e. dual carriageways). I have had front wheel bearings fail and its not that sound (that was really loud eventually but a constant rumble).

This is making the whole driving experience very poor and any suggestions on what his might be would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have had this twice and both times it was caused by the tyres. Just had new tyres fitted and noise has gone

Hi
Should have said brand new set of tyres fitted (others were worn) - no difference!

Scorpion are very quiet tyres for their type. Have you tried swapping the wheels back to front to rule out a bad tyre ? 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

No. They have only covered 1500 miles (perhaps less) so I could swap them front to back.

However the noise is the same as the old tyres. I was hoping this would have been the answer but it seemed to make no difference to this sound. Its not dependant on load (it will freewheel and make the noise).

If it were put on a a two post lift and run in gear perhaps it would be easier to detect from underneath and would of course prove/disprove tyre noise I guess?

That said what would happen on a lift, would all the drive go to the font or does a percentage go to the rear all of the time? (cant remember how it is supposed to work)

I've had the same noise with Scorpions (from new) and stopped as soon as I've changed them...

Ok thanks. Looks like a very £500 mistake then. I think I will try to run it on a lift just to try to satisfy myself that is what it is before I decide what to do. Might also swap the wheels front to back just in case it's one of the tyres.I will post again once I have tried the above......

Thanks. To say it is ruining ownership and use is an understatement. I have owned lots of vehicles but this one is testing my brand loyalty!

As quoted above BXZ we also run our FL2 on Scorpion ATR they are one of the quietest SUV tyres money can buy. Perhaps the fact that your noise has not gone away since you changed tyres says it not tyre related. Do you have a spare wheel ? You could try taking the rear wheels off one at a time and seeing if the problem goes away 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

As the car is the same on old and new tyres its a slim chance then its the new ones but you could ask for the retailers to check them over for production faults. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Hi

Tyres just moved from front to back- no difference. Tyres are in balance so now I will have to go to step 2. Tomorrow night on a 2 post lift to check wheel bearings etc.

Can I run it in gear off the ground? Will the Traction Control throw a wobbly? I appreciate it will not be under load but wonder if its running in gear I will be able to hear something underneath.

Thoughts?
