Any good over & under shotgun would be my preference, with single selective trigger (You can choose which barrel fires first top or bottom) and cartridge ejectors.

You need a farmer (or two) with plenty of land to give permission to shoot, otherwise you will struggle to get a license.

I suppose it's what he can afford and wants to spend as I said to the wife earlier, if he can afford £800 TV speaker, he can afford a £750 gun, to which she said I wasn't getting either

I have a SGC. 50 quid for the grant, 45 for the renewal every 5 years. You can hold as many weapons on it as you want, although all have to be listed. You'll get a licence without land if you belong to an official Gun Club. you'll also need a decent gun cabinet, like a Brattonsound, they dont come cheap. Have a look at a few Gun Dealers and gauge the prices. I think someone is trying to rip the old fella off. No way should a novice be spending that! you'll also need a couple of referees for the application and have to sign a bit so they can approach the Doctor re your sutiability. Of course, the form asks if you have been known by any other name, so you'll have to admit Pinkie I am afraid! That will go down well with the boys in blue. |

CG - Not true. It is every British persons right to own a shotgun providing you do not have a criminal record. My first application interview the question was asked where i'd be using it and i state, 'On Clays' in my local club. That was that - no checking. On my firearms interview i had to provide letters of permission, maps, and show good knowledge of ballistics and have reason for NEEDING each calibre requested. To possess a firearm if very different to possessing a shotgun I now use it for rough shooting and clays. You can discharge a firearm/shotgun providing you are 50 feet from the centre of a public highway and shoot in the direction that has safe distance/backstop e.g. 300 metres for a shotgun. A friend of mine has just caught the bug and is in the same predicament. My advice to him is the same as given here. Go for a secondhand one if its your first shotgun. Try as many as you can get you 'mits on'. If you go to decent clay ground who sell shotguns there will be a vast assortment of second hand ones that can be tried to ensure the fit is right Kelbrook Shooting School is one www.kelbrookshootingschool.co.uk . The key is Fit, Fit, Fit, Fit did i say FIT!!!! Try as many as possible. A secondhand Browning, Beretta or other 'classics' are rarely going to lose any money as gun prices keep going up. Therefore if you do buy a 'wrong-un' you wont be loosing too much money in the change over. I own a Browning Cynergy Pro Sport and a Beretta 682 Gold E. I shoot better with the Browning but prefer the balance of point-ability of the Beretta. Therefore my Browning is up for sale soon as the beretta is more versatile to my needs. I may sell both and buy a SV10??? Best of luck, |

You also need to consider what you'll be using the gun for, Sporting, Trap, Skeet or Game. You can buy different styles but essentially the weight varies between guns for clays and for game (game being lighter as you're carrying for longer).
