Greetings

Hiya all.

Just got myself a Freelander 2 after previously having a disco 3. Must say i am pretty impressed with it. All i need now is some decent all terrain tyres and i will be happy. Whats the best wheel size to go for? I am currently running on 17" rims fitted with 235/65/17 Conti tyres but wouldnt mind putting something bigger on fitted with General AT tyres. Would the additional height of bigger rims give me slightly better ground clearance but at a cost of poorer road handling? or would bigger rims be better on and off road?

Any thoughts appreciated Idea

You might find that running 235/65/17 tyres gives you better ground clearance than running 18 or 19 inch wheels.
I had mine next to an SD4 HSE on 19 inch wheels and it looked as though mine had better ground clearance although there wasn't much in it. Continentals are OK but I prefer Wranglers.

Your 17'' rims seem to be the norm for fitting all terrain tyres so I wouldn't go bigger as all you'll do is make the new tyres more expensive. Lots of people know more than me on this issue but on the research I did for off road 'bit more knobbles' (but still getting a very good on road write up) is the General Grabber AT or AT2. For winter, there is a huge difference (See posts elswhere) the Vredestein Wintrac is the one to go for. Regarding raising the height of the vehicle, if you stick to the correct aspect ratio then the height of each wheel is roughly the same so bigger wheels , say 19'' for example doesn't mean a 'higher' vehicle.
16'' = 75 sidewall profile (or is it 70 sorry not sure)
17'' = 65 profile
18'' = 60 profile
19'' = 55 profile
So bigger the rim the lower the profile = same height wheel +/-.
Going for 19'' with say a 65 or 70% profile would in thoery raise your car up a bit but would send your speedo in a daze and you'd get your wrists and other personal small parts slapped by your insurance company Rolling with laughter so it's a huge NO, NO.

Early Days, but so impressed

Evenin' all, just joined and thought I'd say Hi.

I've been lurking for a couple of weeks seeing what people think of their motors, while contemplating replacing my A3 with an FL2 (so that we could get at least one car out of the drive when it snows; we're at the bottom of a relatively steep ungritted drive/road!)

Well yesterday, took the plunge, drove gingerly up the M40 through the snow in my A3 (DSG boxes, wide tyres not the greatest combination in those conditions) picked up a pre-owned 2008 FL2 HST and romped back to Yorkshire. In less than 24 hrs of owning it I've rescued my stepdaughter from a snowbound centre of Wakefield at 4 in the morning, towed a neighbour's car up said steep and slippy road and then towed a Luton van up the same road as well. Now I know the snow hasn't been that deep here, but even with those 19" rims and Conti tyres I am seriously impressed with what the FL2 is able to achieve.

Just to say thanks for all the rich information you guys post here (well, in amongst the banter, that is Wink ), it certainly helped me make my mind up about the purchase. I think this is a motor I'm going to enjoy, here's hoping it's a trouble-free relationship.
