Biggest tyre?

Does anyone know what the largest size wheel/tyre can be fitted to the FL2?

All Terrain or Mud Terrain for off road use. Thank you.

What size wheel and tyres do you have on your Freelander 2 right now and is it an auto or manual?

I only ask these questions because sometimes bigger is not always better. From as aesthetic point of view, they could look better, but from a useability side, it could work against you. Smile A good friend of mine has downsized when he went from mud terrains to all terrains because it affected the gearing of his FL2 and made slow speed work and leaving junctions harder work Smile . https://www.youtube.com/@scottandalana4x4

Have seen 22" wheels fitted. Looks ridiculous though, and clearly not used for off road.
I'd stick with 17" or 18", biggest choice of tyres, decent side wall to prevent damage and hearing will not be affected. If you need more clearance fit a lift kit. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

245/65/17 BFG All terrain or Mud terrain is the most sensible option in my opinion. 2013 FL2 XS.

We have 245/65/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3Wa All Terrains on our Freelander 2:

If you want to go extreme and you have an auto Freelander 2 and don't mind modifying the bodywork, you can get 245/75/17 Mud Terrains fitted. But this isn't particularly practical for everyday driving (in my opinion).

Without any spacers/lift, I get by with Avon AX7 255/55/r18, with no issues. -------------------------------------------------------------

265/60/18 Geolandar O15 AT.

Look great, BUT fuel consumption is terrible on an an already thirsty 3.2 i6 petrol.
They also rub on full lock - not much, but it's a pain if you need to turn tightly on uneven ground.

Don't have one as of yet. But considering an Sd4 or 3.2, so will be auto.

17" rims would be my choice I think.

I quite like the look of these steel rims:

But if it had 17" alloys on, I'd likely stick with them.

The vehicle on the left has 245/70R17 on, which is about an inch taller than 245/65R17.

Do you know if the 245/70's fit without a lift and without needing to modify anything in the wheel arch? Or what mods would be needed?

Thanks, what is your definition of terrible mpg?

In the city it's hard to tell. But in the Australian outback on the thousands of km of straight roads also factoring in tail & head winds whish can change fuel consumption from 7L/100km to 12L/100km on sealed roads. Maximum speed of 95kph to save Fuel. Makes a difference over a 17,000km holiday. Unsealed & or corrugated roads it is worse. City driving typically 17L/100km

But around 10L/100km in the outback roughly for 235mm tyres & about an additional 0.3L/100km for 255mm tyres. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

These are really old threads but comment on 245/70 R17. No spacers as they are illegal in Australia. His car is not lifted either.

I wanted 17 inch rims but it was just too expensive at the time to buy 6 rims. Ended up buying 1 additional 18 inch rim.

Then let the tyres down accordingly for the road surface. It's why we have 3 compressors onboard to air up quickly. 20psi to 35psi per corner is 30 seconds. We don't want to stand around in the heat, dust & flies forever. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Well, I've had as little as 8mpg in winter on short runs !
On a regular 140 mile motorway run 4 times a year I manage 26mpg. Before I fitted the larger tyres, I was getting around 31 mpg doing that run.
However, I don't drink or smoke, so what I save goes on fuel as my Freelander is my vice !

You can get steel rims from 4x4 tyres or even make a wheel and tyre package on their site:

If you're on Facebook, join the Freelander 2 Off Road Group (FL2ORG) as there is an absolute wealth of knowledge on there Smile . But from searching 245/70 on there, it looks like you'll need at least spacers if not a lift kit as well to run them without rubbing. Maybe even a trim of the wheel arch lining area too. But having not run that size of tyre, maybe others might be able to give you a better idea.

The other thing to bear in mind with 245/70's is how that'll affect the speedo. Moving from 235/65/17 to 245/65/17 on my Freelander 2 got rid of all bar 1 mph of speedo error. For example, when we had the standard sized tyre on, at 70mph on the dash, we were probably doing 66'ish mph GPS speed. With the 245 tyre on, at 70mph on the dash we are doing 69mph GPS speed.

Going bigger than 245/65/17 could mean you're traveling quicker than what your dash shows. I'm not clued up enough to say specifics, but I believe that could be a no-no from the laws perspective/insurance/MOT (delete which is appropriate). Smile https://www.youtube.com/@scottandalana4x4
