Take into account that there aren't only performance tunings/remaps. There are also tunings for improving MPG.
The later ones are focusing on the injection timing and quantity for a better fuel consumption and rarely they increase power and/or torque. At most they are redistributing the power and/or torque over the RPM range to match the drivers style of driving. The driver may even have the impression that the car's driving easily, because the torque is moved on the RPM range where he/she is used to drive.
Those economy tunings are safe to do - if made by a company which knows what they're doing - and even prolongs the engine and transmision life. But this comes with a price: a more sluggish and not so "happy" engine.

I have asked a number of tuners the question about this and are yet to get a satisfactory reply. They seem to be hell bent on power!! I'd love them to be able to flatten out the torque curve... Hi Darling, I'll be home in 10 mins. If I'm not back, please read this message again...

Hi Beauchoc,

This sounds awesome! I contacted them and they said it was 300 plus VAT... so will try to get it done before Jan 01st! Can you confirm your MPG before the remap? Very Happy

Cheers

James

TD4_e

Hi, Could anyone explain what's the difference between standard TD4 and TD4_e ECU's. The ECU of TD4_e aimed at improving mpg. One part was achieved through the Start-Stop system, the other through reprogramming ECU. I'm considering to remap my TD4 ECU to improve mpg. I guess the way Land Rover tweaked their ECU would be a safer alternative to alter my current ECU. Thanks for your feedback!

Not so sure if the ECU has been tweeked, the TD5-e had a heavier duty battery and starter motor fitted to cope with the Stop Start.

Coming from a Honda Element that got 27mpg combined, the 18.6mpg (premium petrol) I'm currently getting in my LR2 is rather painful to say the least. Big Cry

Got a price on the Viezu. 399£ incl shipping with 3 programs. 1 with your OEM program and 2 tunes.
Sounds like a great value from a respected company.

They send you the OBD tuner and you download your original program. Then you hook the unit up to your computer and download the program to Viezu. They tune your original program and send it back to you.

One performance tune and one ECO tune. Wuhu.

But alex.......you say our manual is only made for 380nm??! How can this be on our 400nm cars?? FL2, TD4 HSE

Yes, indeed, the documentation says that the box handle 380 Nm. But this value is for the whole range of RPM and the 400 Nm figure is only on 2000 RPM. Before and after the 2000 RPM the engine torque values are way below the torque limit of the box. And economically speaking, there is no need to put a box which can handle a lot of torque when most of the car life this torque value will never (or rarely) be reached.
And also because the car has a torque truncation map for first gear and reverse in order to protect the gearbox.
There are two switches on the gearbox which can tell the engine ECU that you are in first gear or in reverse.
These gears have the greatest demultiplication values and therefore on these gears you can damage the box if you really want to. Thus, the engine ECU will limit the torque output values when you are on these gears to protect the box.
This is another problematic issue that (real) tuning companies should take into account when making a different tuning map for a specific engine.

Thank you once again Alex for a great answer Smile
You are a real champ in this forum!

I asked Viezu what issues I might face with this tune on the Fl2 and got this in respond:
"We have extensively tuned this vehicle, there are no issues as long as torque is progressive within the mapping"

I am considering the Eco tune.
FREELANDER 2.2 16V TD4

Original BHP: 157

Power: 32 bhp

Torque: 75 Nm

Fuel saving: 15 %

What do you think about this? I am aware of the extra wear on the clutch.
Coming from the Audi scene I am very spoiled when it comes to tuning and the possibilities of the 1.8T engine....... FL2, TD4 HSE
