I wouldn't expect a hybrid engine in a Freelander for quite some time, most probably LR will 'test the water' with the LRX's hybrid engine to see how far it will take them. Take Lexus for example, when they first brought out their hybrid engines, it wasn't across their range but just one model, eventually moving onto other models.

I wouldn't mind betting the US spec FL2's are better spec than ours!! We don't have those wheels for a start. Were those colour coded door handles standard on the US car? They are optional here. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

If you want what we get now (HSE, leather, auto, 3.2L only)...they are! Mr. Green They stopped the initial SE offering rather quickly in (our) 2008.

We don't get any cloth, manual transmission, diesel engines, G4 Kit, or e_terrain tech though. Sad

They now (2009 MY and later) come with 19in wheels as standard fit. They'll give you 18in if you ask.

In 2009 MY they changed to "Titanium" door handles on all colors. It just so happens to match the Stornoway Grey in the picture I posted. Surprised

Freelander 2 wish list - compared to HSE

Air suspension as an option - because it is not practical to fit as an aftermarket add on. No need for it to be all singing like the Disco, I just want to lower so I can reach the roof rack, and raise for off road so I stop hitting the fuel tank.
Underbody protection - mantec kit works well.
Fit side indicator in wing, not vent, so snorkle becomes an option.
Rear ladder as an option, again mantec kit works, makes the roof rails more practical.
G4 roof rack as an option.
Either side opening, split rear tailgate or electric rear window for long loads.
Spare wheel where it should be - accessible on the rear.
Junk the steering and start again. Find who did FL1 steering and offer him lots of money.
Loose second sunroof and fit solid front sunroof blind.
Loose 200mm from width - too wide for some green lanes, and a pain on ASDA car park.
Loose gimicky auto dipping rear view mirror - have taped up sensor on mine.
Loose front pockets on front seats - does any one use them?
Ash tray - OK the old one was a pain, but there is nowhere for sweet wrappers on new car, and LR(Ford) genuine accessory is poor fit.
More cup holders.
Bring back plastic front wings with the "eyebrows" that take scuffs and smile.
Height adjustment on Passenger side - Wifes 4'10".
Start button & fob slot on right hand side.
Change auto wiper switch so it has to be initialised every time you start up, - hate frozen wipers.
No electric hand brake please.
Wheels / tyres suitable for off road, 18" damage far too easy, will be getting a set of 17" with AT2 as soon as cash allows.
Lower 1st or crawler gear - auto doesn't need transfer box.
proper cubby bow in centre console.

Had FL2 2.2d HSE since March 2007
• Sort out all your electrical problems please!!!
o Battery had to be replaced in Dec 2009 (less than 3 yrs old ???)
o Fuel tank gauge issue (unit had to be fully replaced) – multi visits
o Parking sensor in the wet – sound; making them useless and annoying
o Radio – will power on but no sound from speakers[You have to lock the car and reopen it]
o Had the key start issue and a number of other minor problems (mirrors, SE warning etc)
The company I work for can help you with this as we make a real alternative to DSpace Systems!
Product suggestions
• Interior lower plastic parts, feel very cheap and deform with little pressure. Look at Volvo, Audi or BMW X range to compare (both price and brand status)
• Interior mats, please have some form of anchor points on Front and Rear Passenger areas – I am forever retrieving them from under the seat or front consol. Also put a thicker wear area on the driver’s side (mine has worn out).
• Upgrade the interior lighting (use ultraleds.co.uk - (264) 42mm 6 WA SMT Leds Festoon 1W=11W output Warm White [U426UWW] ) – this also goes for puddle lights
• Have ambient down lighting over consol
• SatNav – use TomTom s/w and be able to upload your own POI files (for wifi hot spot, and cameras etc)
• Dashboard – up date to new Dicovery led version
• iPod USB port as standard (even 3 series BMWs have these!)
• Key fob is horrid – new keyless Discovery much better
• Bluetooth phone system – sound quality poor for recipient of call (lots of road/wind noise, my colleague hate it).
• Central consol looks dated
• More lighting in the boot (both sides, use bright LEDs) please !!!!
• 12v socket in boot [think this might have been done already but not in my model]
• Overall a little more leg room front and rear (I’m 6’4”)
• Larger boot (when camping a little more space is always useful)
• Cargo net to separate cabin from boot space (stops dog and stuff coming in cabin and is also important for safety)
• None slip straps in boot (aka similar to BMW) to stop thing sliding around so much
• Covered storage between passenger and driver consol

Current FL2 very nice car to drive looks great externally, good off roading. Interior needs to finished off better. Plastic panels very soft and moves easily, making it feel cheap.

Engines

• Maintain MPG or improve if possible (Stop/Start looks to be a good idea)
• 0-62mph is a little on the slow side (compared to rivals)
• BHP also looks low (compared to rivals)but Torque is very good
• Diesel engine seems solid.

mork: Your product suggestion list I would buy Thumbs Up - Most are sensible refinements that would enhance our FL2 and not cost LR a great deal to incorporate.

Engine refinements for the Norwegian market would have to be lower CO2 emissions and no increase in BHP, otherwise increased taxes would kill off the almost nonexistent market as it is. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

AndyC - no joke it's my genuine wish list, yes I do prefer the asthetics of the FL1 - not the reliability.
My issue is that we all use our FL2 for going to the shops, driving to/at work, and some of us for towing.
What we buy into according to the LR blurb is the ability to drive across the blazing heat of the Sahara, the inhospitable Falklands, and the frozen wasteland of ----- Yorkshire.
If I wanted a comfortable motorway cruiser with a big boot for shopping and bought with my head rather than my heart, I would have bought a Mondeo or Octavia.
No - I will be taking it across the Sahara like the last one, I will be knocking seven bells out of the underside on the Welsh hills like the last one, and I will be towing a van to Europe (no CG I will not leave it there).

I will always want it to be more reliable, more capable off road, more easily carry long trunking for work, and by the same token still need it to be a comfortable motorway cruiser (30+k/Year), be able to fit in the supermarket car parking slot and MOST importantly built in the UK.

Before you say Defender, I hate the driving position, the misses hates the looks of the Disco, and RR is way out of the equation on price.

I can appreciate why LR have to make compromises all the way down the line if they are trying to build a vehicle that can accomodate most of our wishes.

Don't get me wrong I love the FL2, the engine, transmission, brakes, and build quality are in a different league to my 06 FL1. If it was nicked tomorrow I would be round at the dealers for another - in Orange if possible.

1.I would like to have satnave that can take route and way point info from a USB key or a memory card.
2. Settings like 'mirror folding or not when locking the car' user configurable settings (Like in new RRS)
3. DSG gearbox - (possibly 7 speed). That will improve the fuel economy by 5 to 10% and faster gear changes as well.
4. Electric steering rather with steering pump. This will improve the fule economy again and maybe even allow for different levels of effort at each TR setting.
5. Headrest to be adjustable for both the hight and angle.
6. Relocate the seat memory buttons to a better place so that you dont have to open the door to see them. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto

Yeh well - Our FL2 suits very well for the purpose we bought one. Long journeys on non motoway standard roads with plenty of gear. Mountain tracks in winter and summer and some off-roading/off-tracking. Half a year winter with temps down to -20C, driving in deep snow and ice on normal roads Thumbs Up . To my mind that is what a Land Rover is built for, not just urban shopping and cruising motorways Shocked .

If we had needed a normal vehicle for the types of uses you describe, we would have replaced the BMW Touring with another one. So to me it does seem you would have been better off without a Land Rover of any type. Whistle 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

I can appreciate some of what you have said because I've had LR's from new every time and for me it was like this:

Defender 110: love'em except for the fuel consumption (gave them up when I left Derbyshire for CH, as it was only in the last few years that LR managed to get the them officially past the Swiss emission regs for legal sale)

Discovery: just don't like the box-van silhouette.

Range Rover: enjoyed two - excellent beasts but I lead a calmer settled family life style now in my advancing years. More James May than Clarkson.

So here it had to be an FL2. Large enough and understated to please my Swiss other half and our young daughter. Goes where I point it whatever the terrain or weather. Excellent fuel economy and comfort. Sadly very expensive here in CH compared to its many pretenders.

But, the icing on the cake: Grandma (72) said at first sight that it was beautiful (Ipanema Sand + Terracotta Leather). Considering that she is pro public transport (this is Switzerland) and anti private car ownership - and - that all her other children and some other relatives have between them a fleet of German 4x4 and large estate cars this made this son of Albion very happy indeed.

However, with regard to your comments re ASDA parking spaces - well i've experienced no problems easily parking correctly at the supermarkets here.

Have to say I agree with a lot of Andy131's list - FL2 is the only really viable option for me due to fuel cost these days, but for all LR say about not building "softroader" cars it seems they missed a few tricks with the FL2 - no real off-road recovery points (or anywhere to fit them I can see), no option for a proper steering and sump guard, no option for a raised air intake, no way to mount a winch.

My wish list for a FL3 model would be:

Keep it simple / keep cost down
Crawler 1st gear (no need for separate low range box)
make it more fuel efficient
think about the aftermarket for off-road use

I appreciate there is a huge market for pseudo range-rover vogue / chelsea tractor use, but there must also be a market for those who want an entry level priced LR that is properly capable off-road...

The option to order air-suspension
the possibility to have at least two mobile-phones connected at the same time.
The car should be 20 cm longer. 10cm more for passengers, and 10 cm more for luggage.
The possibility to adjust the angle of the back-seat.
Somewhere convenient to store coins, sun-glasses and such.

Those are the most important ones.

Now, go ahead and make it! 2008 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Automatic, Caspian Blue, Alpaca, Moon roof, Exclusive pack.
