Can confirm that the Wife's FL2 does it too.

After a long journey, the first depress of the clutch is always stiffer than normal. I don't see it as a problem. ______________________

I made an earlier reply to this thread stating I had no problem.

Well, that changed just a few weeks before my FL2 was sold, I had significant problems with the clutch.

Not quite the same circumstance but this is what happened ... got in car one morning, clutch very stiff, pushed and pushed but pedal would not move ... pushed again (very hard!) pedal moved ... went to the floor and stayed there ...

On that day I was desperate to make a meeting 180 miles away, (mostly motorway) so had to find a plan B ... Found a 2 metre usb power cable in the glove box ... tied one end around the clutch pedal and other end was in left hand ... this enabled me to pull the clutch pedal up and therefore engage it. Journey was made successfully and at the end of the journey the clutch had sort of come back to life although was very slow to release and engage. The cable remained attached to the clutch pedal for about 4 weeks before I returned the car, through that time the cable was used from time to time but the clutch was still poorly when I returned the car. I hope the new owner got it sorted. Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor ... but not any more ... ... psst look at my gallery!

Same issue, although my FL2 has 36000 on the clock, i have only noticed it it the last few thousand miles.
I am taking it up to me mothers in Northumberland next weekend, so going to see if the issue still arises.
Its a kind of strange feeling when you depress the clutch, still and feels weird!

well tested this on a 2 hour drive from Barnsley to Gateshead, no change of gear, turned off for the metro centre, the misses idea not mine!
and the clutch, was so stiff, so will be booking it into the dealers next week for them to take a look. Anyhoo off oot on me mobike.....

Mine has been back twice to the dealer the second time the gearbox was taken out but I still have a stiff clutch. Has anybody had this problem fixed by a dealer?

Don'suppose any of you have found an answer to this have you? My 07 plate never did it(90k by the time we parted) but this 09 plate with50k has started recently. After a long run without changing gear the first press of the clutch is really stiff, then all is fine, it's going in for a service on Tuesday, any comments would be appreciated.

Mine is in tomorrow , exactly same fault , long journey clutch really stiff , dealership told me hey have never heard of the issue before , reading here I think they might be trying it on

Mine has done this for a while now. Champion when cold but after half hour or so driving in top it stiffens. I think engine heat may have something to do with it. Could the slave cylinder be drying out a little or the thrust bearing sticking with the heat and that first push frees everything? It is hard to find a fault when not there all the time but if so many folks have reported this then it is not a one off. Somebody in the engineering departments among the LR dealerships may have a logical reason why????

Mine does this & has done for quite some time. I thought it was just my imagination & that after a while without using the clutch my leg wasn't used to pressing the pedal.
Has anyone had a dealer fix this? Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

I would be slightly concerned, there are no cables involved and no clutch fork to operate the 'release bearing'.

The master cylinder rod is directly connected to the pedal and the pressure is then transferred to the slave cylinder that is in itself combined with the 'release bearing', so the slave and release bearing sits on the mainshaft and its this bearing that may well be resistive in moving, ie picking up on the shaft initially when asked to move.

I'd certainly mention it to the dealer and ask that it is recorded on the cars log sheet in case it escalates to a problem in the future.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.

I have had this stiff clutch after a long journey from 3000 miles, now on 16000, mentioned it to the dealer (harwoods tonbridge), they advised that the gearbox needs to come out to investigate. Dealer has then replaced the clutch and release bearing and slave cylinder, the clutch and bearing showed signs of blueing which I believe is heat issues. The flywheel and other bits were fine.

The removed clutch has never slipped or shown any other signs of wear and the only thing I have towed is my son on his toy tractor.

Can anyone tell me why this blueing occurs.

I have no experience of this on a Freelander 2 but if the slave cylinder starts to stick or seize, the clutch may not engage properly or smoothly and hence overheat. It would also cause the pedal to require more pressure. John
