Cyprus 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Stornoway Grey
Stiff clutch

Hi guys,

There is something that i have noticed with my freelander2 and i want to see if other owners experience this:
When i am in the highway travelling at high speeds (100+ KPH) and have 5fth or 6th gear selected for lets say more than 20 minutes, then when i exit the highway and i want to select a lower gear, when i press the clutch its more stiff than usually and i need to put more power to press it. This happens only the first time i press it after exiting the highway and then it is ok.
This happens from the first day i bought it new from the dealer. Is this normal? has anybody else experienced this? Freelander 2 GS TD4, Stornoway Grey, Manual, called BEAST!!!

Doesn't sound normal to me.

I had a similar thing on a car once and it turned out to be the thrust bearing.

Have no idea if that's your problem tho.....

Yes, my FL2 does exactly the same. I always think "I`ll mention that at the next service" but then forget before it goes in.
It has always done it and never seems to have a lasting effect. Don`t drive faster than your angel can fly!

Yup, exact same thing with mine (a 57 plate SE manual).

Dealer has no idea and unfortunately it's the sort of problem that's near-impossible to replicate without taking the car for a half hour drive and then back again.

I'd guess it's some sort of pressure build-up, which is relieved when the clutch is pressed and gears moved.

I am confused now, it seems that half of the people that replied don’t experience this and others do, so is this after all considered to be a problem for the car or not? Someone told me that this is done on purpose from Landrover so as when you are travelling at the highway and you have your foot relaxed and it touches a bit on the clutch then since the petal needs more power to be pressed this helps not to wear the clutch disk accidentally Freelander 2 GS TD4, Stornoway Grey, Manual, called BEAST!!!

As long as the clutch and everything is working and it goes away shortly after depressing the clutch I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm currently on my fifth Freelander 2 and the first four didn't do this...

The clutch is not meant to get so stiff that it's difficult to depress: that is a fault, not a design quirk!

I have exactly the same problem with my FL2. The dealer had it for a day last week and could fine nothing obviously wrong. Now they now want if for a couple of days to have a look at the gearbox. Has anybody had this problem fixed by a dealer?

I mentioned it at the last service and the problem seems to have got better, but not gone away completely.

They did say they couldn't find a problem, which makes me think that the process of changing oil might have something to do with improving it.

Most odd...
