United Kingdom 2012 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Orkney Grey
Hi everyone

New member/FL2 owner here! I picked up my TD4 HSE auto back in November.

162k miles with a few niggly issues but nothing that affects it running - drives like a dream, I absolutely love it. Glad to be a part of the community!

South Africa 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Whistler White

Just bought a Freelander 2 SE with low Km, s..... It's not considered a true 4x4 in Africa purely because it lacks low range but for my purposes there is little to beat it. Had Subaru forester until recently and that did most of what I needed, the LR2 is going to be way better.... I tend to do most of my own maintenance hence will be looking to the forum for advice.

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Santorini Black
Just saying Hello!

After years of Mercedes saloon ownership, local potholes and my bad back made me want something with softer suspension and taller sidewall tyres.

Now (2 weeks) a very happy owner of a 2013 GS, I've only found one tiny issue - the Hazard Lights don't work (indicators are fine). I've done loads of research and find conflicting information - i.e. look at the switch, look at the fuses, look at the relay.

Could an FL expert point me in the right direction? Thanks in anticipation.

p.s. I've found out something interesting about using the USB port, but will look at the site further to find the best place to post it.

I used to own a Freelander 1 until around 4 years ago, when due to family issues, I had to dispose of the FL
and give up driving, but I will soon be in a position to get myself another vehicle and start driving again.

I am considering getting myself a FL2. What should I be looking out for as a prospective buyer?

I am in the UK.

Try and get the latest one you can 2012 onwards with a good service history as the youngest of these are 11 + years old make sure it has had the ten yr service I.E. cambelt water pump change, PTU oil and rear diff oil change, gearbox oil as well as the Haldex unit serviced also check the front and rear subframes for rust.

Depending what your needs are the SD4 is quicker where as the TD4 is a bit slower but cheaper on insurance rd tax and fuel consumption (I get 45 mpg on a motorway run) 2013 FL2 XS.

My FL1 was a 2006 TD4 so would probably want a diesel.
I used to do most maintenance, servicing and repairs myself, but not sure if I want to do it all myself now as I am getting on.
Does the FL2 TD4 have a belt or chain as the FL1 did?

Both the TD4 and SD4 have a cambelt, servicing is easy only tricky bit is the oil filter but if you have the correct swivel head 27mm spanner its not an issue, Haldex can? be awkward but if its been done recently should be ok for a couple of years, I am 70 still do all my own spannering getting under is ok but getting back up is sometimes a challenge ! 2013 FL2 XS.

Hi Martin, I want to post a message, but can't find where the 'new topic' icon is. Any idea as to how I do this?

Bore Da (as the locals say)

Hello - just a courtesy post to thank you for the forum, and to officially join.

Like many people, I have been reading plenty as a 'guest', but as I have now pulled the trigger on an FL2 I think it only right that I do it properly.

I am off on a 9 hour train ride tomorrow to collect it from Durham, and then give it a 350 mile drive home.

Never owned one before, but have a reasonable knowledge of the earlier version, having driven 3 of them from home to The Gambia over the last few years to donate to charity..... all were 2.0Td4, 2 auto, 1 manual, all given a good going-over before the trip, and all got there without (major) issue - who says they are (or can be) unreliable? Oh, and they cost me £400 each, rescued from scrapyards to be given a new life.

After the trip this year, (on which my wife joined me) we decided to get one as our daily driver to replace the VW Caravelle.... but decided that the FL2 would be a better bet for that..... and have been looking for a "good" one since.

So, it is a black HSE, 2010, but facelift (60 plate), SD4, with Ivory leather and ebony trim...... under 100K miles, service history, and the MOT history is faultless - well, not really, but as the only mentions have been down to low tyre tread, it reflects on the early driver(s) more than the way the vehicle has been mechanically maintained.

It doesn't have a history of cambelt replacement, so I will be doing that as a 'first' item when I get it home, and give the brakes a proper strip/rebuild so I know where I'm starting from....

I have a reasonably comprehensive tool kit, a large garage, and 45 years of experience with spanners, so don't think I'll be using a garage much - so, I hope to find the answers here. (I've already ordered a 27mm low-profile socket and an engine/camshaft locking set)

I also run a classic car forum, so am aware that using the search facility before asking a question is the way to do it.... hopefully, I will not be 'that guy' who asks the stupid questions, but I can't guarantee it.
