Clock on tyre rotation

Hi there, I would just started by saying I'm not very mechanically minded so excuse me.

I recently started hearing a bang/clonk on wheel rotation, not all the time but it comes and goes. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with power but when I lift off the accelerator, then brake I can't hear it as badly.

My car failed its MOT in Dec on a split CV boot. A friend of mine replaced it and said my lower ball joint would need replacing soon. Is he right?? Or could it be something else? Common issue? Thanks

I took the photo tonight, it was a clear sunny day here in Sussex, but there is obvious moisture.

Your picture appears to be of the Nearside Front wheel - but I could be wrong... The intermittent "clonk" could be a failed CV joint - particularly since you mentioned the car failed on a split CV joint boot recently. Although the CV boot has been replaced - the damage may have already been done.... Best way to check is to find an empty car park, apply full lock to the right and drive around in a clockwise circle - the "clonk" should be more obvious if the NSF CV joint has failed. If nothing heard, try anticlockwise...

The "moisture" you mention is difficult to determine, but looks like CV joint grease from the picture. Either it is old grease from the old failed boot, or the new boot is leaking (probably not strapped tight enough onto the CV joint).

Lower ball joint might be on its way out, but if it has passed an MOT since December, I'd put it lower down the list of things to fix...

Thanks for the response! Yes it is on the nearside, I have only covered approx 600-700 miles since the CV boot was replaced.

I will try your car park trick tommorow! Thank you!
