Bled the brakes. Sealey pressure bleeder, 24PSI, plain sailing.

Well, apart from the NSF which nipple, which has well and truly seized. So "mostly" bled the brakes.

I've given the nipple a thorough going over with a brass brush and a few drops of plus-gas and have a new nipple on order. With a bit of luck, I should be able to get into it again next weekend and put some freeze/release on it before having another go at cracking the corrosion with a 9mm socket (socket better than a ring spanner, to get a bit more control over the leverage).

The old fluid was very dark with a fair bit of air coming through. I put around 1.5l through, brakes already feel massively better. Current driveway contents:
2021 V60 Cross Country B5
2009 FL2 dog bus and shooting wagon

On Order: 2023 Fisker Ocean Ultra - deposit paid.

Made it clean and used some Colour Magic polish to reasonable effect on some surface scratches...

On Friday my suspicions were confirmed that my PTU pinion bearing is just starting its journey to the end of its life...

Success!

Lots of wire brushing, lots of freeze lubricant and some gentle tapping with a small ball peen hammer on a long 9mm socket placed over the offending nipple and it released. I already had a clamp on the hose so whipped the rusted nippe out smartish and immediately put a new one in. Same as last week, 24PSI and bled through to clean fluid.

Took it for a spin up the road, hammered the ABS with the NS wheels on some gravel and everything felt spot on.

Also fitted yet another tailgate release handle..... They do like to fail!

Then did an oil change on the rear diff. Big syringe and some flexi pipe, I got just over 650ml out. Next weekend I start building up the springs/struts for the rear suspension rebuild. Current driveway contents:
2021 V60 Cross Country B5
2009 FL2 dog bus and shooting wagon

Put the new rear springs/shocks together with all new ancillaries (boots, bolts, isolators etc). Fitted up the the arms to the new subframe. Chucked it all in the boot so I can give it to my mate's guys to fit it all on the ramps at his garage, because I'm too old to be dicking around lying under a car on my driveway doing something of this scale.

Long list of other things to check/do while this is being done, hoping to get it all back in top condition when I get back from holiday in 10 days. Current driveway contents:
2021 V60 Cross Country B5
2009 FL2 dog bus and shooting wagon

On Order: 2023 Fisker Ocean Ultra - deposit paid.

Dealer annual service completed -- MOT passed with no recorded problems.

BUT - I had to buy a new tyre as I had a cut into tread through to the canvas, pity still had 5mm of tread left.
( a second tyre had a piece flat metal in it, which was removed ok)
Am I the only one who thinks that the Government/Council cuts are wrecking our roads and costing me money.

I declined the offer of a 3 door Defender as a courtesy car as the car was 'expensive' they wanted me to pay the first £1000 of any damage/scratch. I happily accepted a Jag E-Pace (Auto Diesel) with a £30 waiver.

I still am finding that sitting in most of these 'new' SUV cars feels like driving from within a post-box and viewing the world through a slot. I still prefer the 'old-fashioned' high, open view of my Freelander. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

I think dealer courtesy car charges are way OTT. My stealer wanted a lot of money for damage insurance the last time I used them. My local indie charges £10 which includes insurance and fuel - although I expect that only covers a reasonable amount of fuel. My insurance covers me for damage etc. to a loan car while my car is in for repair or service but it was easier to go with the garage scheme.

Re: Courtesy Cars

When I went to Bells for haldex and diff service, Austen gave me the use of a manual Freelander 2 some spec or other… no charge at all. Thumbs Up

Had new boots fitted

After all my research and saving for the tyres I wanted they were out of stock.

So a quick bit of research and fitted a full set of Pirelli AT+. They have the original H speed rating in 235/65 17.
Chunkier than I thought - excellent. Have to go have a play and see how they are off road.
