Which would you go for ?

After selling our FL2 15 months ago we are seriously thinking of getting another, however, when looking at a late HSE (2014) its apparent that for the same money we could buy a Velar or Discovery of the same year. Which way would you go ?

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Firenze Red

All I can say is that a good friend had a Velar from new - said it was the worst car he's ever had - lots of electrical faults - got rid of it and bought a Volvo XC 60, which he's had for a few years now.

I also wouldnt touch an Ingenium engine.

But it depends what you want the car for.

Our Freelander is a workhorse and gets loaded with allsorts of filthy stuff that im not sure I would want to put inside a Velar.

When it eventually goes Im not sure what Id replace it with - but Id want something reliable - maybe a Skoda or a Toyota. Jules

England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Orkney Grey

Hi, sold the Freelander a few years ago but often pop in here, more to see if my old car ever appears. Any way, we reluctantly sold ours as we’d have otherwise been hit daily by Khans congestion charge Censored Bought a Skoda Karoq which was a lovely car save for the fact the seats weren’t doing my back any good so after a year decided it would have to go. Looked around JLR dealers for an E or F Pace Jaguar but no sign anywhere of a petrol variant. I’d retired and so couldn’t really justify buying a diesel given our reduced mileage. I then spotted a Velar had been taken in p/ex at the local dealers. It was a P300 HSE R-dynamic. 2 litre petrol, 296bhp, on a 68plate. Aesthetically I personally think it’s a fabulous looking car both inside and out, and better still Significant Other agrees. Hoping there’s a photo in my gallery 🤞
I’d initially thought of it as a prestige SUV, but we were given a three hour off-road LR experience day when we bought it and although I drove their mild hybrid model I was left pleasantly surprised at what it could do should it need to - water, mud, rough terrain. Add to that the beautifully appointed interior and where’s to go wrong. It’s obviously not as rugged and as utilitarian looking as the ‘big’ RRs but for everyday life I wouldn’t fault it.
It is however wide, near on 7ft with mirrors out!
There is a good owners forum (velarforums.co.uK) with a decent spread of variants covered and people on there are way more knowledgeable than me.
Everyone though will advise to buy with good service history and more especially a warranty. Like all JLRs they can be expensive if anything big goes wrong. Needn’t tell you that though, coming from a LR 😏
By all means PM me if I can be of any more help
Barry
