I've just seen the pictures. Those are Goodyear Wranglers, which were an OE tyre.
Definitely check your pressure gauge for accuracy, or buy one of a known accuracy.
However it could also be the tyres at fault. I have seen some issues with Wranglers crumbling like yours, but can't remember the reason now, but I suspect it's due to some form if breakdown of the rubber.

As an aside, I use a pump with a digital gauge and automatic cut off. It's accurate to 1 PSI, which is good enough.

They've been replaced better luck this time!

No roughstuff / just the front/ I've had them changed so they should be balanced see how it goes!!

NO, I've changed them today so have to see what develops, then I might look into your suggestion.

Something else that springs to mind, it could be the tyres are being overloaded by a faulty Haldex. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

As an aside I looked at images of damaged tyres on the internet.

The nearest I could find in appearance was 'Tyre Graining' as happens when motor racing tyres overheat.

Interestingly though, nothing matched your damage pattern across the tread.

Does anyone know if tyre compounds vary across the tread width, seems the only explanation?

2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Baltic Blue

They can do as the tread compounds are discrete bands around the tyre. More likely to be used on a motorcycle tyre where you want grippy compound on the edges and longer lasting compound in the middle. Unlikely on an all season SUV tyre though.

Hi nodge68. I've thought of this and did'nt want to believe it. The HALDEX has had oil&filter change a job which entails running the car for 1/2 a mile or so, then topping up when the filter is full, if that final bit was omitted what might be the consequences??

Don't forget that the tyre pressure listed in the handbook is only relevant for the original factory supplied tyres, and just a guide for different tyres.

hI Nodge68 sorry for jumping in, i have recently had 4 new tyres fitted and 4 wheel tacking done. Pirrelli scorpion verde 235 65 17. They inflated the tyres to 37psi.......this cant be right i thought they should be 32psi ?
