United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Izmir Blue

Have never had problems reversing the caravan uphill even when reversing uphill onto a leveling ramp . There is always initial resistance until the reverse mechanism on the brakes releases. Remember there are never problems, just new challenges

You could always have a tow hook fitted to the front and back it up going forwards?
Interesting to note though that vehicle manufacturers never seem to quote the performance when a vehicle is going backwards?
Maybe they dont really want you to do it?

yes reverse on my manual is is very poorly geared, so i find you have to rev and put excessive strain on the clutch on steep inclines, it should be set up for much lower speed and more torque.

The Fr2 clutch does get smelly very quickly. Not sure whether to worry about this - it hasn't started slipping yet, but it's the only car I've ever owned where any slip of the clutch brings up the "cooking" smell to such an extent so quickly.

I am considering buying an auto petrol Freelander. Either the 3.2 or 2.0, both have similar power and torque. I'm in New Zealand so it will probably be a Japanese import.

I need to be able to reverse a 550kg trailer up a steep drive, with a turn and very limited clearance. Slow and careful. Previous 2007 diesel Kia Sportage managed it. So did the 3 litre diesel ute. And so does a Range Rover 4.2 petrol auto.

I've read lots of what has been posted here but I can't find any info on reversing uphill with trailers using the petrol engines. If anyone here has any thoughts I'd be interested to read them

Isnt this more about how the over-run brakes work on the caravan/trailer rather than the FL2.

I cant recall having an issue reversing my trailer with the FL2 even when it was well overloaded (1000kg+) but it is unbraked. Jules

I don't know about the 2.0 petrol but pretty sure the 3.2s are all auto?
Never had trouble reversing our 1600kg twin axle caravan uphill with Sd4 auto. Previous manual Discovery was easy with low range box. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Ukraine 2013 Freelander 2 2.0T SE Auto Fuji White

I pulled a truck loaded with 3 tonnes of roof tiles bogged on nature strip with ARB tow rope, in reverse, up a modest incline & about 30° to the side. Had to avoid parked car. Could have towed a different direction but the truck driver was worried that the truck could tip over, as it was leaning to the side a fair bit. He had spun his right side into the ground.

It was a bit excessive load so wouldn't want to do it often or for too long.

No issues with reversing, 2.0L petrol & auto. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Could this apparent resistance be the normal 'Hill Start Assistance' that seems to automatically initially hold my car if I stop on a slope, up or down?

Does the resistance to movement occur all the way up the slope or just as you start moving?

I take it that you have taken caravan over-run braking into consideration.

I find that even 'solo' the auto brake hold function can make it tricky when trying to manoeuvre in tight sloping spaces, for example in other peoples sloping drives, or when parking in line on a slope, as it feels like you are jumping off brake suddenly. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Going off at a tangent; A few years ago I was towing a Mirror dinghy in the outside lane of a motorway (illegal) and got pulled over and later had to produce documents at a local police station of my choice. During that presentation discussing with the officer, I said the dinghy and trailer was only about a third of a ton and my Range Rover was capable of three ton so not much danger on a motorway. He said he was an ex motorway patroller and used to drive RRs and that in the past he's actually towed a 44 ton lorry into safety !
