OMG, never done this before with the freelander and I cannot believe how useless it was!

Trailer weight is roughly 1500kgs, Not much of an incline and it kept stalling, the only way to do it is to bring the revs up so the clutch smells! Pushing the trailer would of been easier!

Cannot believe how shockingly pants the freelander is at this!! I need an auto!!

I assume you locked off the trailers brakes.

I've just been reversing a tandem trailer up a hill in the farm yard round a corner into a barn. using my ford ranger easy peasy. After using the trailer to transport the lawn mower tractor to the village school to cut the grass. At work

Yep rolls fine and the flat backwards! Crap car

Must agree that autos are better for lots of towing.
Problem with reversing on hills is that the auto reverse function does not get the opportunity to do what it is supposed too if the trailer weight is already against the stops, so to speak. Certainly have had this trouble before, if starting on the flat then up the hill might be an option, perhaps that could be the future?
Thats probably why it struggled to start with.
Based on my own experiences with this and usually bigger tow cars after the initial push it frees off and is easy.
Never towed with a FL2 so cannot judge its ability.

Just a thought, which might be rubbish but here goes:lol:

Would using a different mode on the TR have an effect, as setting off in normal mode it is effectively a FWD trying to push itself and a trailer backwards, just a thought.

It's a common fault with most vehicles with a six speed box, they have to make the reverse cog so small to get it in the box, this makes it so high geared.

Quite a few of us already know this from regular experiance, perhaps some people should take a little notice of what the owners with vans say

Does that mean the FFRR & D4 are rubbish at reversing with the 8 speed box?

My defender had 6 gears and was fine!

was it a braked trailer and you may have activated the trailer brakes my folding camper is approx 1000kg when loaded never had a problem reversing up hill or on the flat  rainy-city

Also had low range and was not fitted with a Transverse engine and gearbox.

Ifor Williams trailer with proper over run brakes. Don't have any issues with any other car I have used towing it

Will try taz's idea, aslongs my clutch does not melt!

Probably just me but I was forever stalling in reverse without a trailer, never did it in forward....Strange.

open drivers door lean out, watch trailer and go like hell. works a treat.
defenders are great for that as you are practically sat outside the door already At work
