Vibration issue

I have a manual 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 with a mileage of just over 103,000 and a full Landrover service history. Recently it has developed a vibration issue in 4th, 5th and 6th gear when the engine is put under load. In 4th gear the vibration occurs in the range 1,700-1,900 RPM, in 5th gear between 1,650 and 1,850 RPM and in 6th gear between 1,600 and 1,800 RPM. When in these gears and rev range, depending on the load being placed on the engine, the vibration can be mild through to severe. A couple of months ago I had a new clutch and flywheel fitted however the vibration issue only started a week or two later. At the same time, during a cold/icy spell, I used the all-terrain selector in Ice/snow mode, something I’ve not touched for 2-3 years. I don’t know if either of these things relate to the vibration, or just co-incidence and its something else entirely. The car was returned to the Landrover specialists who fitted the new clutch and after a thorough visual inspection, they could find nothing untoward, but acknowledged the vibration issue existed, but had no explanation for it. The engine runs well, the clutch operation is smooth and the car has never given me any particular concerns. Has anyone experienced anything similar or does anyone have any theories on the cause ?

I'd be pointing the finger firmly at the new clutch / flywheel combination.
The garage who fitted it, probably don't want to be stripping it all down again I suspect, and have probably said it's fine just to be rid of you.

Regretfully I think you're right and it echo's my own thoughts on the issue. Thanks.

A 15 year old car. Have you had any of the engine mounts changed yet? They all have rubber components and will be pretty much worn out I’d think. There is the possibility that the engine assembly was moved a little during the DMF/clutch change and this could have finished off an already failing engine mount.

The engine mounts were considered and were inspected but no visible issue was found with them. There was also the fact that the vibration only occurred in a narrow and fixed rev range, whereas vibration from failed engine mounts could be expected to give vibration in all gears and over a much wider rev range. However it still has to be worth bearing in mind. Thanks

If the vibration wasn't there before the clutch and flywheel were replaced, then it's most likely down to something to do with those items.
It won't be anything to do with the TR system, as that simply modifies the way the Haldex and traction control works.

There's been many vibration threads over the years, mine also has a mild oscillating vibration at about 1600 RPM under mid throttles, but it's always done it and hasn't got any worse. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Was this a Landrover Dealership or an actual specialist ?

I think you need to more than just look at it Laughing They found nothing untoward but then agreed there was a significant fault Rolling Eyes Jules

is it a vibration throughout the whole car or more like shaking in front axle / steering wheel?

The steering and front axle are fine. The vibration is throughout the whole shell of the car.

This sounds somewhat similar to the vibration at around 1800 rpm that has plagued many owners of automatic FL2s, my own included. No one has yet come up with a solution so it will be very interesting if a cause for your problem can be found.

The solution for my shuddering at around 18,000 revs was a recon Torque Convertor and of course a full flush. Also have a new Rear Crank Seal fitted at the same time

Thanks, I Like Chips. I recall reading about it possibly being the toque converter in one of the many threads on the topic but perhaps your use of 18,000 rpm may also have been a contributing factor! Laughing But joking apart, I did consult a local auto gearbox specialist who thought it unlikely to be the torque converter. Not much help to the OP, however, with a manual box.

Yes a bit heavy on the pen with my revs. All I can suggest is you find another gearbox specialist. One who has had success with fixing the problem. Out of interest what solution did your specialist suggest. Maybe better to start another topic

Thanks to everyone so far for the replies. My own thoughts still centre on the clutch and flywheel replacement as, before they were changed the car was smooth throughout the rev range and in all gears. The issue only arose after the clutch was changed. The new clutch manufacturer was consulted and asked if they had ever had a similar issue reported to which they said no (but then you'd expect them to say that). The problem is always though that its in this very narrow rev range, only when under load, and that the rev range drops 50 in each gear (4th, 5th and 6th). The problem may exist in the higher gears but isn't as noticeable because the engine load is proportionally less.
