Glow plug problem

2010 HSE auto diesel
Well, minus 7 this morning. Took ages to start car. Just turning and turning.
Glow plug light on. Did try the trick of waiting for light to go ff, switch off and try again.
Fortunately brand new Yuasa HSB110 battery which kept going until car eventually fired up.
Although glow plug light on I suspect not working.
How can I check the glow plugs? Have an Autel AP200..
Think I should just get a set of glow plugs.

Similar story here this morning, but no happy ending...as yet! Dash is reading -6C but that is with the full sun shining on the front of the car and at noon, so it must have been a bit lower overnight.

Cranking well and gets to that point where it is trying to fire but won't run. Battery is probably not at its best (3 or 4 years old) but was doing the job and I gave it some added help from a Noco Boost. Fan heater under the car now, just in case it is a fuel gelling issue. But really most likely be the 13 year-old glow plugs.

No prospect of any warmer conditions before Friday, so I need to get it going somehow! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Very Happy Fan heater seems to have done the trick! Dash now reading -3C and it managed to start! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Been out and about all day. Outside temp got to the dizzy heights of minus 2.
Car started every time perfectly. Going into my garage tomorrow to see what they can check.
Car is parked tonight turned round under carport to give a wee bit more shelter to the engine end,
Big cover over engine also.

An interesting question above

At what temperature does modern diesel become to thick to work (or flow?)

I remember from years ago that trucks and buses used to stop working on very cold days, not heard of it recently. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Ian, diesel fuel in the UK legally has to be good down to minus 15C.
Has been for a number of years now.
I remember in to "good old" days trying to get machines and lorry's started in minus temps.
We used to put a gallon of petrol in the diesel cars when filling up to help.

Question, should i go for genuine glow plugs from LR

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Firenze Red

I used to have a Kenlowe Hotstart pre-heater system in my Discovery 1 and 2 which worked well as they took ages to warm up.
I dont think Kenlowe still make their pumped water heater but there must be other systems for cold climates.

FL2 has an electric windscreen, PTC heater, heated washer jets and heated seats, and I dont need to commute any more so Ive not felt the need to upgrade it.
So far its not had any starting issues. Jules

Having got the FL2 started at lunch-time and needing to get back north from Glasgow, I didn't risk turning it off again until I got home. It will be interesting to see if it starts normally tomorrow morning. Dash was reading -8C most of the way up the A9, dipping to -10C at Dulnain Bridge and Tomatin. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Janderson41, I see that you are around the -8C figure again this morning! (Well, a weather station in Johnstone is showing -8C and one in Kilbirnie is also -8C, so I assume Howood is similar!). Hope it starts today!

Mine started first time this morning at a balmy -2C, no delay, no churning, no hesitation, so it would seem that my problem is only at temps below the -3C mark. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

When I served in The RCT driving 1944 built Leyland Hippos we use to put 10% paraffin in with the diesel to keep the trucks going in sub-zero temperatures, you cannot do it in Civvie St as the two fuels are taxed at a different rate but during the "cold war" the Army did as they please. 2013 FL2 XS.

Had a quick look to see if yesterday's starting debacle had left any error codes and there is nothing new amongst the usual list of minor gripes from the ECUs. But I wonder if anyone can explain what I am seeing here:




I would have expected the "commanded" to relate to the relay position and the "feedback" to relate to the actual output device, so Commanded off and feedback On, shouldn't be possible? Neither seem to change at any point in the ignition on and startup sequence, where again , I would have expected to see the Commanded side move to On, even if only fleetingly, during startup in subzero temps. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Hello Worms, interesting photos.
Took ages to start today at minus7. Thank goodness for new battery.
Again ran perfectly all day. Numerous starts.
Which reader do you have. I have an Autel AP200.
Could I find the section you found.
Collecting set of Glowplugs from Taggarts tomorrow although garage is too busy till next Wed.
Giving the new battery a boost and will give my old battery a charge in case I need to jumpstart in the morning.
No faults show up on the Autel or the garage reader. Jim A

Jim, that's a screenshot from the live values part of the GAP Tool. On most of the other live values, I can make the values change by switching the functions on and off, but these two don't seem to change in response to firing up the engine. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto
