Crankshaft Position Sensor: Genuine or.. Not?

Hello!

It looks like the crankshaft position sensor on my 2007 Freelander 2 2.2 diesel has started acting up, the the car jerking and on occasion cutting out completely.

I rang my local Land Rover dealer and ordered a new one at a cost of £107 plus VAT, however looking on motor factor websites and eBay there are some for as little as £20.

Now I know this is probably a silly question, but are the £20 ones simply a waste of money? It seems too good to be true to be less than a fifth of the price.

2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Santorini Black

I got a bosh branded replacement a while ago for £15 and have had no issues. And easy to swap over.

LR use Febi, as that's a PSA OE supplier.
I'd avoid cheap Ebay specials, as the Big Cry pins are often too thin, causing bad connections which results in rapid sensor failure. I've had 2 cheap sensors fail in 18 months, so I now have a Febi sensor, and I replaced the plug too, so a firm connection was guaranteed. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Id go genuine or OEM as some other posters have suggested.

I bought this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153013054913 and it lasted 2 weeks before I broke down...the car just cut out (its an auto as well so can't have been great for the gearbox) and coasted to a stop..luckily I had somewhere to pull in safely.

Bought a genuine Land rover one and its been fine ever since.

There a two different types of Crank sensor depending on VIN

Would you like to elaborate please Chips. I am currently arguing with auto doc, regarding a cps that was recommended by Alex on this forum. My old sensor was throwing fault codes, and I had a few "jerky" moments. The replacement sensor they supplied, when fitted to the car, made it impossible to start. Re-installation of the old one and it fired straight up ( albeit with clouds of smoke from the sunburnt fuel and non start !).

I've had that myself, I just bought another one, it has been fine for the last three years.

Quality control has always been a problem, not just with car parts. The door in the factory signed Testing Dept on opening leads to the outside World

The target wheel and sensor was changed to the later type quite early on in production, and many early ones will have been changed to the later type during subsequent maintenance work.


It's strange that there was smoke after the failed start, as a missing crank signal will or should prevent fuel from injected.

It is possible that excess oil was drawn in while cranking, which may have been responsible for the smoke? Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

How did you replace the plug?

FWIW I find the JLR connectors break easily when old; the locking tab snaps - but maybe im using the wrong technique to open the plug. Jules
