oil leak on 2.2 XS

Hi guys, a newbie here, a friend of mine pointed me in your direction in relation to my wifes Freelander 2.
We have had the Freelander since 2020, with 108.000 miles on the clock. and a full service history which ive kept going since its purchase.

Ive been doing oil changes every 5000 miles , however latest oil change i noticed oil in the metal tray under the engine, gearbox side. This leak i have notice has gotten worse to the point its now covered the outside of the tray and been blown towards the back of the car.

Did some reading up on this and cant tell if its engine oil or gearbox oil or haldex oil .
i hope someone could shed some light on what this could be and is it an easy fix? its due its MOT soon so would like to get it sorted before then if possible

Thanks in advance guys
DBD

Could be Rear Crankshaft Seal. I would also check PCV pipe to PCV valve connection first.

Hi Maurice, could it possibly be from the power steering. The bottom set of pipes are notorious for rusting through. Mine,s failed completely. Couldn’t,t even see the crack. Jim A

Its not the haldex as that is situated in front of the rear wheels.

I would leave the under tray off, clean that leak area (hand spray some degreaser and gently hose dose on a fine spray (do not jet wash). Then take it for run to dry it off and then look for the source of the leak.

It looks red/orange in your pics (or is that just rust)- could it be coolant ? Old oil is black/brown, power steering fluid is various colours (mine is very pale yellow). Jules

Hi Jim, firstly thanks for directing me here, i dont think its power steering as the level hasnt dropped nor has coolant or engine oil.

It is definately some form of oil as i had to use brake and clutch cleaner to get rid of it on the inside of the engine tray.
Ill definately take the tray off and have a look to see where its coming from,

I thought they called the front differential the haldex too?

Nope, the haldex is a very specific , electronic locking drive train device which feeds power from the prop shaft through to the rear differential to which it is attached.

The front differential unit feeds power from the gearbox to the front wheels and also the propshaft, via a bevel gear, and is referred to as the Power Takeoff Unit (PTU).

I had a similar problem it was oil seal to PTU from gearbox, PTU had to come off and drive shafts also so to save time all the oil seals were replaced, not a huge job (if you do your own work) but if its out might as well change the lot. 2014 Freelander 2 XS TD4

Well i thought id have a look at how to replace the rear crank oil seal myself but nothing comes up, so i thought look at clutch replacement, as i lknow that would get me as far as the crank seal and found this

Hmmmm too many nuts and bolts to be removed and put back as id forget where they all went.

Yes you can see the RCS in the movie problem is getting to it and putting everything back, especially without a lift. I would have done it at the roadside easily in my youth but not now.

Update on this issue, took it in to have two new tyres fitted by my local mechanic and for him to have alook to see if he ca pin point the leak.

He said its definately not engine oil its definately coming from a drive shaft seal or transfer box..
Its booked in for MOT and for the leak to be sorted at a different garage as my local mechanic doesnt do gearboxes or clutches
