Well what a day!
Heading to Dublin early afternoon, on the A1 with caravan in tow when a sudden pop, hiss, loss of power and 'reduced performance' message appears. Knew that it was an intercooler hose before I'd even limped to a stop at a nearby shopping outlet. A quick look under the bonnet confirmed the diagnosis.
What to do?
Ring RAC and wait hours for them to come out to tell me I had a split intercooler hose? and then more hours for a recovery truck to a garage which would by that time be closed?
Leave the caravan and limp home?
Not an option, son heading for national swimming competition in Dublin.
No, fix it yourself in the car park seemed the obvious solution!
Having replaced this hose before, only last year, (bloody Britpart), I knew its a bumper off job to get at this (lower hose to bottomof intercooler.)
Fortunately when going caravanning I carry a fairly comprehensive tool kit and socket set so, car driven up a set of caravan levelling ramps, under tray off, headlights out and bumper off, (much to the amusement of other shoppers) offending hose removed to find its split in 3 places! Multiple wraps with duct tape and all back together within about an hour. Set off with fingers crossed but a screeching noise signalled all not well and boost pressure leaking still. I had visions of it failing again with almost 100 miles still to travel.
Now really fortunately, and most unusually for us, my wife was bringing her car too on this trip because I've to go back for work for a few days. So her 2.0 Tdi 4motion Tiguan, with an almost never used towbar, was substituted for the poorly Freelander and off we went again with my wife driving the Freelander, which without 1.6 tons of caravan on the back drove perfectly normally and quietly without being worked so hard.
Tiguan had never towed the van before and only has single 7 pin socket electrics, but I have an adapter for the 13 pin euro plug, although it wasn't operating the automatic trailer control system on the caravan. But apart from that snag, and towing mirrors which didn't fit, we managed to get to our destination only about 1 1/2 hours late.
So caravan now set up, by me on my own, wife and son off to evening swimming event. When they get back we'll get dinner then put the awning up.
I'm considering getting a replacement intercooler hose locally and repeating the saga tomorrow at the campsite or I may just collect one on my way home on Thursday without caravan and fix it at home.
In could have been worse if we'd been heading for a ferry, or in the depths of France as we often are at this time of year it would be a bigger headache.
Time for a beer I think!

Well a trip to local LR dealer in Dublin, only a 10 minute drive from me secured a new intercooler hose, strip and repeat, in the luxurious caravan site workshop this time. The old hose had blown just below where I had done a DIY repair with tape, maybe a 10mm split, enough to cause a screech and loss of boost. No sign of any other damage to intercooler or hoses. I'll maybe take it out for a clean in future. Hopefully thats the dramas over.

Once replaced the clutch slave cylinder on my Discovery whilst holidaying on a caravan site in Yorkshire.
No need for ramps - plenty of room to get underneath it. Jules

So I'm taking the wife to work today and heard this almighty hissing noise from the engine and thinking it's the worst, probably turbo. Got under the car to find the hose had split. Big Cry Is it possible to replace the hose without taking he front end of Gavin, or is it a case of suck it up butter cup and enjoy the weekend with spanner in hand?

If its the bottom hose where it connects to the intercooler you'll probably find you can't get at the hoseclip to release it hence having to take the bumper off for access. If its the top hose at the throttle body you can do it without dismantling. I've had my bumper off a number of times now. Not particularly difficult to do. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Yes definitely the more difficult one. Changed the easier one last year and after seeing your issue I was intending to change this one only not just as soon 😂 . I tried to upload my work in progress but think it has been added to my gallery instead 🤔. Job done though!

Having had to replace the same ic hose twice now I'm considering an upgrade to silicon hoses. Everywhere I look seem to sell the intercooler to intake manifold pipes, presumably these are the common failures, but what about the other side of the system from turbo to intercooler, is anyone selling a set of all 4 uprated hoses?
I know I've just replaced standard rubber version but keen not to suffer this breakdown again so looking for a more durable option. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
