I read a report on towing with an EV that had a range of just short of 300miles and it came down to 90 miles towing a caravan, which I suppose for the average caravan owner that would be adequate, however for the annual holiday to the south of France or Spain it's going to be a long time with a large number of overnight stops. They may not even make the ferry in one day.
One thing I do wonder is with the huge amounts of torque available what the tyre wear is like my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

I had to leave central france, and head to Yorkshire on Monday morning on an urgent family matter. Luckily for me the travel restrictions have been relaxed. No option of flying as lots of Ryanair flights have been pulled.

Left at 1000 hrs, stoped for fuel fill up locally. Next stop the eurotunnel at 1710 hrs. 're fuelled. Next stop Yorkshire at 2205 hrs. Taking in to account the 1 hour time difference, 13 hours in the saddle. 687 miles door to door. Motorway speeds in France 83 mph, and UK, mostly 70 mph, with a few 50 mph roadworks (although Brexit has made those less important).

I do not believe that there is an EV capable of doing that at the moment, despite spending 10's of thousands of pounds. My £4.5k 12 year old TD4 never missed a beat, and returned 40.3 mpg (actual, not on-board consumption ). For me, certainly in the short term, there is no competition.

Our lives are increasingly complicated. I do not wish to further complicate my life and have to pre plan, buy a backup genny, worry that there may not be a charging point, be unable to stay overnight at friends unless they " have facilities" drink endless cups of coffee whilst my car gets a fresh charge etc.

For those who only travel locally, yer pays yer money and takes yer choice , my neighbour does just that in his Renault Zoe, EV and is perfectly happy........until he faces a long journey, and then uses his Mondeo diesel lol

I have just noticed that the grant for installing EV Home Chargers is ending in April. (For Most)

It looks as if it is still available for those without drives to park in.
(remember to look down and pick your feet up whilst walking down the pavement, as I think that this is to encourage 'on the road' charging', and thus trailing cables.)

https://www.which.co.uk/news/2021/11/homeo...pril-2022/

Apart from noticing that the Government don't seem to announce cuts like these with quite the relish that they announce cash giveaways, I take it that the "Carrots" that encouraged us to go EV are to be gradually replaced by some big "Sticks" that will penalise those who continue to burn Diesel or Petrol in their cars.

I was going to end by wondering if the main EV grant was going to gradually disappear, but on checking its already getting smaller very quickly.

13 years from now when you'll no longer be able to buy a new ICE car, you think we'll still have 250 mile range on BEVs? Current driveway contents:

Probably not, but it also won't have much impact on my life in 13 years time, however, I am sure others will thank the pioneers endlessly for spending so much of their hard earned paying for the research on EV's ............. whch will possibly have been superseded by the next big thing by then ?

You make a good point re. early adopters. I've debated this myself before putting my deposit down on the Fisker. As I see it, I can afford it and in doing so will reduce my pollution footprint (societal gain), help fund improvements in tech (societal gain) and the range pretty much meets my needs for over 98% of my journeys (personal gratification). So for me I'll happily jump on the wagon if it helps bring the more mainstream offerings to market that bit sooner. Current driveway contents:

Those who believe that hybrids are reliable haven't been on the Disco Sport website - typical LR, the heating system that uses the HV battery is failing, so no EV, don't even think about going to the dealers as parts are like rocking horse poo.
Sad bit is it's not even a LR part - Webasto I believe, who have been making heaters for years.

ICE systems that are Euro 6 compliant are complicated bits of kit, EV systems aren't exactly simple, putting them on the same vehicle just compounds the difficulty come repair time, and the more complicated a system the more failure modes.

Yes you can buy a Chinese BEV for not a lot of money (in LR terms), but when it breaks what happens then?
I was reading only last year that the MG6 which was sold in the UK until 2016 doesn't have parts backup, the magasine (Car Mechanics May 2021) tried to get a part needed for the MOT but failed - dealers said they were obsolete. What about the "fact" that manufacturers must supply parts for ten years after production ceases? Well it's not a fact, it's actually a voluntary code of practice that quite a few car manufacturers haven't signed up to.
So forget about the battery only lasting 3,000 charge cycles, if a circuit board goes west, that cheap Chinese car is now a very expensive ornament. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

I have enjoyed reading the posts since i started this post.
There is definitely a split in opinion which is only to be expected.
My personal take is that i like ICE vehicles and will run mine as long as possible. Luckily i am nearly 60 so chances are ill keep this vehicle until i stop driving Very Happy

For me the issues are:

- EVs are very expensive and have more or less been the privilege of those who can afford them
- They are not the only way to improve your environmental footprint (we are being brainwashed to believe this is the case)
- For me i also like tinkering and looking after my vehicle
- There is an unsaid issue with the environmental credentials of EVs as batteries and the production of them is expensive and not environmentally friendly, and you need to buy it and run it for at least 2 years before it pays to own it Shocked
- EVs are heavier and tyre wear will be greater and as you know tyre wear is a hidden environmental issue
- Finally, current consumer behaviour is to buy or replace a car every 3 years...this does not help the environment as it encourages even more vehicle production so the cycle continues.

Yes EV's are expensive but so are all new cars nowadays and only getting worse with the chip shortage
Spot on they are not the only way to improve your environmental footprint the best thing you can do is not to have any kids this is the elephant in the room so to speak when it comes to the environment there are just too many of us on this planet and everything we do other than addressing this is just a sticking plaster
Don't worry about the impact of making the batteries it's an impact for sure but not nearly as bad as the oil industry how many major spills have we seen devastating the coastline
Heavier yes tyre wear I don't buy that the tyres on my model S have covered more miles than I have ever had out of any previous cars only my vans with the mega high mileage plastic tyres have done more miles on a set
The fact that first owners only keep for 3 years is neither here nor there as long as the vehicle is not scrapped and is picked up by the next owner then the vehicles life continues

I get people are scared of change and I don't like the fact we are only going to be able to buy EV's I bought mine by choice and I believe that by 2035 the vast majority of buyers will by choice
Unfortunately there is whole industry out there trying to discredit battery EV's and its funded by those with vested interests in stopping them taking over they prey on people's fears
These cars will be around a long time they have the ability for a very long service life
Much longer than the average ICE car does now
I am also a tinkerer I love cars I used to call myself a petrol head but I have realised I just love cars all cars (well the great ones anyway)

Fisker expects to keep each Ocean on the road for a minimum of 12 years through continuing refurb and lease plans that allow people to get older but perfectly functional cars at much lower prices. Current driveway contents:
2021 V60 Cross Country B5
2009 FL2 dog bus and shooting wagon

On Order: 2023 Fisker Ocean Ultra - deposit paid.

Every company that makes anything relies on people getting rid of perfectly usable items for a newer model or upgrade otherwise they would get to the point of no one buying their products anymore. The self same arguments were probably taking place when the motor car was first introduced. They could only be bought by the well off who also had to employ someone to walk in front of them with a red flag. Could you drive any distance in them as where could you get petroleum distillate to refill the tank? Nah! They will never be a success! I`ll stick to my wooden wheeled bone shaker thank you very much! Mr. Green
