New Car - Should I replace the cambelt?

Hi all, great forum and I've picked up loads of good info whilst waiting to pick up my first LR a 2010 FL2 with 22k miles on it.

Does the low mileage mean that a cambelt change isn't something to worry about just yet or is the age of the vehicle a factor? Appreciate any advice, cheers Dave.

Hi Dave and welcome.
Timing belts should be changed on time or mileage. 22k miles is low however the car is approaching 12 years old. Original advice was 10 years, reduced to 7 for some reason. I just changed mine at 7 1/2 years and 85000 miles. It looked like new. Peace of mind though? £300 or a replacement engine? Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Always replace cam belts on schedule if that happens before mileage. Unless you have a non-interference engine and don't mind if you have to get towed.

Replace cam chains on mileage.

Not got it yet and hoping it's already been done but if not will need to be one of the first things to sort out. Thanks for the good advice 👍

Hi,

as Bob says £300 will cover the belt/pump/service if you do it yourself double it if you take in to an idep garage

Mileage or Time which ever comes first

I would want to know How Question the low mileage has been done,
1 trip every fortnight for a good run is fine but 1 mile trips 4 times a day to take the little people to school and back is a nightmare for diesel engine its never got warm Shocked
low miles is not always the best !

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

I'd have thought an indy would charge about £300? I did mine for the cost of the parts c£100. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

For the sake of £300 get it done then forget about it for 60,000 miles/10 years

Hi,

local indp that are L/R specialists are £450+vat so £500-£600 is a ball park for belt/water pump and service and 4-5 weeks waiting for a slot Shocked

and I would still be asking how the low miles where done Whistle

Had mine done last year by local garage for 320 inc vat so that sounds quite expensive. But may depend where you are in the country...

Thanks for the enthusiastic response, off to see it on Friday so will have a better idea of it's history after then. Apparently one previous elderly owner so it probably wasn't school runs. Does seem very low mileage but supposedly in really good condition having been garaged overnight with a full LR service history. Is there anything obvious I can look for that might point to the engine having suffered through only being used for short runs? I'm mechanically inept by the way. Would mileage that low mean it's best not to consider it and the risk is too great?

I'd say its probably been cherished and well looked after (or if it's an owner like my late grandmother there won't be a straight panel on it😄)
I wouldn't rule it out but may have a few minor 'niggles' if it's pressed into bigger mileage after a life of short trips. Cars need and like to be used. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Thanks Bob, I'm really hoping I'm going to be a LR owner come Friday so keeping my fingers crossed there's going to be nothing to spoil it 🤞

Just been quoted £750 for cambelt and water pump etc by M J Fews at Charfield. They used to be a LR dealership but still do LR service wrk. I dont think i will be booking my car in any time soon. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.
