Hello everyone. I wrote in another thread about looking for a FL2 in Iceland, and I am currently in the process of trying to find a good one. One of the FL2's that I am looking at has 18" wheels, and I am curious how these fare off road. I don't really care one way or the other about how they look or how they ride on the road (I have a feeling the difference will not be large), but I am concerned that they will make off road driving more difficult. I am sure they will be fine on regular gravel roads and easy dirt paths, but for the more challenging terrain, how will they compare to the 17 or 16 inch tires? 17 seems to be the standard size here.... |

If you plan on taking it off road even a little bit look for 17s. The more sidewall you have the better and the difference on road will be minimal. You will also have a better choice of off road or all terrain tyre if you wish to do more. |

Thank you both -- we'll see whether I wind up with a FL2 that has 18" wheels. I may be able to get a smaller size here in Iceland and sell the 18's, but there are not that many FL2's here, so I am not sure there would be much of a market...all things being equal, 16 inchers would be even better right? Or is there more tire selection with 17 inchers? |

I got 19's and they aren't very good offroad. So I bought a set of 17's and they awesome offroad, heaps more sag when you let them down for soft sand etc.

wheels don't really make the difference, the tires do. I carry a gun because I can't carry a cop.

I would think the smaller the rims are, the better for off-road.

As Viking, I also use 18-rims in the summer, and I go really off-road.

Is your Freelander 2 somewhere in the photo under the snow? Looks like the road is ready plowed and no problem to drive there. Like this:
