Engine noises - aux belt?

Hey folks,

The freelance is making some noises Smile

It’s coming from the engine and is there from idle up to about 2000 rpm where I guess it gets drowned out.

I can best describe it and a mix of a rumble and a rattle. With the bonnet up it does sound like it’s coming from the belt end of the engine.

Searching the forum it seems like it’s a common issue. Has by one any tips on how to diagnose what specifically is causing it or what it’s most likely to be?

Thanks

If its coming from the drive belt area could be a bearing in either the PAS pump, alternator, air con compressor, or belt tensioner? try taking the belt off then run the engine if the noise goes then its definateley one of the above.

I agree, most likely is Alternator front bearing, they can howl just before they seize and break the auxillary belt.

In a hunch I changed the power steering reservoir and it’s a lot quieter.

The fluid looked like it was originally the colour of ep90 with a dark tinge. It’s now bright red and clean.

PS fluid is green central hydraulic fluid, not red Dexron ATF. Red ATF will damage the system. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Well, it’s now green!

Fortunately I kept the old reservoir and was able to cycle a couple of litres through and give it all a good flush.

I will give it a week and drain the reservoir again and top up.

Everything seems ok and hopefully all good
