FL2 2007

This week the alarm went off for no apparent reason 3 times on a very hot day, twice without sound and once with. Checked the windows, sunroof, boot, bonnet catches etc every time, then it apparently went away when the temperature dropped.

Today I'm getting a constant ticking from the battery backup sounder next to the battery. No way to turn it off other than than pull the plug. The ticking (chirp?) is much like that from a smoke alarm when the battery is failing.
I've read about this unit affecting the main alarm system with false triggers.

I know I can replace the unit, but where's the fun in that. Has anyone taken one of these apart before? Looks like grinding the case rivets off should get it apart. The battery is probably soldered in, replace it and put it back together. All fixed, or do you know otherwise?

Generally, as it has its own battery, a good practice will be to replace it once at 4-5 years, during service...
If they fail, the car will use the horn, as there is a permanent "talk" between CJB/alarm and sounder.

Thanks Alex, as you say, good practice would be to replace it at service time but here in UK we don't do that sort of thing until it becomes necessary. I wonder if any FL2 or Ford owner would voluntarily pay to have the sounder replaced "just in case"?

So far in my research I've found an advisory recall to have the sounder replaced due to problems occurring. That would explain the date label of 2010 on the sounder (the car is 2007). So it's been replaced already.
I have ordered a new battery online at £8.39 and according to the manufacturer it has an estimated life of 6 years.
I could have bought a used sounder for £20 but if changing the battery doesn't work, I can still do that.

Hi, I know this is an old thread but I have a problem with the sounder going off. I have removed the unit and opened it like you did. The date on it is the same as yours although the car is 08. The battery seems to be holding charge at 6.5v

I was wondering whether to just leave the unit out or to order a new battery for it.

How did you get on, did a new battery cure the problem?

In my case replacing the battery didn't help. The new battery discharges over a few days so it looks like there's a problem in the trickle charging circuit to it.

Without a circuit diagram to help I gave up in the end and didn't bother to refit the unit to the car.

Buy a Ford one from eBay they are exactly the same but cheaper

No point wasting £30 on a used ford or LR sounder that may be just as bad as the original. I will leave it out, who needs a back up alarm on a 2008 Freelander.

£25 brand new in a sealed bag, that's what I paid

Does anyone have a part number or where to buy a new on or new battery u cannot find these anywhere online and my car is doing the same thing

Recently had the alarm sounding randomly with no lights flashing or horn sounding, locking and unlocking didn’t stop the alarm and you could drive off with the alarm still sounding. Only way to stop the alarm was disconnecting the back up alarm at the rear of the engine bay.

Bought a second hand back up alarm from the bay off a Jaguar XF for £14 posted and it cured the problem and has been fine since.
