I have the Td4 engine , 126k mls.

Thought I was doing well to get over 40mpg

That was at 56mph over a motorway journey of 37 mls.

I have had closer to 50mpg its mostly down to Driving technique, I am a HGV Driving Instructor and also teach what is called
Eco Driving or otherwise known as SAFED safe and fuel efficient driving.

Try not to stop keep the vehicle moving do not accelerate up to a red light or traffic que. do block gearchanges missing out 3rd and 5th dont change down through the box when stopping or use the gearbox as a brake a set of pads is cheaper than a gearbox. 2013 FL2 XS.

Hi Rommel, I have just read your post and it reminded me of my ambulance training with the driving instructor bellowing at you saying "Gears are for going and brakes are for stoping" and heaven forbid if you got it wrong. Rolling with laughter

Very interested in this thread. Although after 17 years of Disco 1 and zDisco 2 the fact that my average fuel use has never been below 25mpg. Have had 4o on 150 mile round trip. To me this is great and quite happy to live with the mpg. Money back in pocket. Jim A

The trip computer is currently hovering around 35.7mpg as an average for the last week or so, trips mainly back and forth to the office (motorway and some urban).
Know it will be lower in reality but never seems to far off so satisfied enough with that Andrew

Had a longer run for work last week, South Wales to Salisbury (via Pontypool) and back and the old lie-o-meter showed an average of over 41mpg for the trip. Was nearer 42mpg for most of it but the works on the M4 near Cardiff at the moment saw to that. Andrew

OK so this is an old video but the principles are the same and can be applied to cars with a manual box though all trucks now are mostly auto, the thing is maintain momentum where possible and avoid coming to a complete stop by reading the traffic and road ahead.

Travelling from M1 J28 up to M1 J35, i reset the MPG as i went down the slip road, set the cruise to 74mph (which i know is 70mph via separate GPS), decreased that to 62mph passed Sheffield Meadowhall, and the lie-ometer was showing 52mpg.
Heading back down later I did the same again and got 47mpg.

normally round town im getting around 30mpg so thats about right but i was impressed with the motorway mpg

Today I measured my MPG once the car was warm.

I waited until I had travelled about 5 miles and cruising on the motorway, the FL2 warmed up and short period of heated seats, etc finished with.

After zeroing the trip I got an indicated average 42.3 mpg over the 16.7 miles to my junction with cruise-control set at 65 mph indicated. The road was dry and flat (its called the Somerset levels), air temp 8 c and a very slight head wind.
This is the highest mpg that I have recorded ever when I have looked at it.
I continued on my day trip, a circular route on reasonable roads 40 - 50 mph, returning over the Mendip Hills.
The trip included 3 stops of about half an hour each.

My readout for the day (about 86 miles in total), was average 38.7 mpg and average speed 34 mpg, both indicated.

This overall figure is better than I normally get on my tank to tank readings, I got 35.1 mpg average indicated the last time I refilled with diesel.

My Trip B reading that has been running since I had this Metro (40K+ miles) is reading 33.5 mpg, and would include many a cold start, heated seats (and steering) in winter and hours of AirCon in the summer. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

My First £100 Fuel Bill

Today I got my first £100 fuel Receipt.

I filled up after 457 miles with about 12.5 gals = 36.5 mpg.

It doesn't seem that long ago that I used to fill my first car for £1.
(Well it was 1961 and 4.5 galls used to take my Ford Popular's 6 gall petrol tank's gauge up to the top weekly.)

My last fill was on 7 May at £1.799 - £109.70; three weeks before that it was £1.739 so where did the supposed reduction go?
Just glad I no longer need to commute

Unfortunately I cannot see motoring costs going down anytime soon.

The real RPI for April 2022 was 11.1%.

As this is the measure with to which most prices are adjusted (example rail fares), then I think that we may be in for a rough ride, and will need to brush up on our hypermile driving skills.
