Haldex problem???

Learned gentlemen,

2012 F2 GS 38,000 miles. Serviced at a main dealer from new.

I think I may have a problem with the Haldex. I reverse out of my parking space and this requires full left lock followed immediately by full right lock. When on or very close to full right lock I get a loudish clunk which can be felt and seems to be coming from the front near side, then I get one or two similar clunks that seem to be coming from the rear axle. It feels a bit like wind up in an old Defender when the diff lock has failed to disengage. This only happens on cold mornings and only on the first time in the day I reverse out. I have searched and read many threads on the Haldex in the technical section about this problem and I think the possible cause is low oil level in the Haldex. I should be grateful for your views on this matter.

J

Mine did that before the rear diff seized sold while I was driving at 40 MPH. Big Cry

I found absolutely no oil in the diff, which can only be down to really poor or completely missing services.
I'm not saying that yours won't have oil in it, but getting an idea of its condition would be helpful.
I'd change the rear diff oil, and see if there's any metallic particulates in the oil. Get the Haldex fluid and filters done at the same time. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

First the bad news - sounds on FL2 travel really well, what I thought was a rear differential fault turned out to be a front wheel bearing.

Noise from the front could be the splined coupling between the gearbox and the PTU - this slips and bangs as the splines jump. When you set off while turning a 2 wheel drive tends to spin the wheels, the FL2 gets around this by sending power to the rear, this puts the PTU under load, hence it first shows up when on full lock. If you are handy with the spanners it's not a massively expensive job - then again could be the Haldex, differential, or a drive shaft spline /CV failing.

Good luck with the fault finding, I know how annoying intermittent faults can be, and every journey a worry in case it turns serious while you are out. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

or just the twisting of the suspension...
Worn ball joints and bushings can have a serious impact. As can suspension isolators.

You can easily disable the haldex by unplugging it from under the car or removing its fuse - that helps to prove or eliminate that part of the drive train. You will get alerts on the dash but dont worry it
wont do any harm. Jules

Your clunks sound very similar to what I was experiencing just before Christmas (see my posting in Technical headed "PTU failure?")

It turned out to be the drive from the gearbox to the PTU failing, and required a reconditioned PTU. Nothing to do with the Haldex at all, despite the sound appearing to come from the rear end.

Hi new here from Australia. When trying to diagnose noises from suspension and drive line use “chassis ears” . There are audio clamps that can be wir Ed or Bluetooth connected to head phones. It will help you pin point the area of the noise. You can buy them on eBay with up to 6 clamps making the process fairly quick to locate the area.

Had this on my first Evoque which had the same running gear as the FL2 at that time. Massive clunk from the nearside rear, Land Rover assist came out and diagnosed it as a wheel bearing so just escorted me to the local main dealer.

Turned out to the be PTU and stripped splines to the manual gearbox. New PTU and sleeved shaft and because the car was a lemon anyway (another story) a new gearbox as well. Cost the LR warranty close to 7k just for those bits

Turkey 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Lago Grey

hi
2009 model freelander 2 hse, although I changed all the orinks, the oil is leaking. The service inspected the hole, no cracks, no damage, but the oil leak continues. Is there someone who has a suggestion for me?
