Nokians were/are great cold weather tyres, they are one of the biggest exporters from Russia of goods (tyres), unfortunately a few years ago Nokian got caught supplying “special” tyres for a press review, I used Nokians back in the 70’s on our 2CV during bad winter snow, sailed past everything on hills.......Nokian also have plants in their original Finland and in the US I believe, which is why I asked.

For day to day use I don’t think I you can beat normal Michelin, Continental and even Bridgestone nowadays.

It’s really strange that tyres are often bought on their looks rather than performance, and of course because they are cheap is a reason people often buy the ditchfinders, but not one I’d recommend. Regards

If Nokian had just moved to the Russian factory then I would wait.

But they have been building tyres there for 15 years

Yes they have been building in Russia for years.......I might be more inclined to buy if they had recently moved there, newer machines better manufacturing technology etc

I did a quick search and it looks like Land Rover is 14th for market share in Europe

Nokian and Land Rover seem like a very good match.

There have been several instances reported on the forum about premature age cracking with Nokian Tyres. Have a look at the Nokian Weatherproof topic.

If you do a high mileage so that they will "wear out" within a year or two I think they are OK, but I wouldn't put them on a low mileage vehicle if they are expected to last more than 3 or 4 years.

You are making a fair point.

When selecting Tyres step 1 is the pick the right type of Tyre

For Mr. Taft I recommended All Season Tires

If you live where I do then you can drive Summer Tire or All Season Tires

If you want to drive Winter Tires then you need to move to the snow or have two sets of tires/wheels

I do see that Nokian has the Weather Proof Tires

If you look at their marketing this tyre is positioned between the All Season and Winter Tire.

It didn't replace the all season Tire.

If you live somewhere that 70 degrees is a hot day in the middle of summer then the all weather will likely be fine.

Alternatively don't drive if the temperature is in the 70s, 80s, 90s or higher

Take your bike instead.


The Nokian Z-line A/S should be fine for the type of weather that London gets.

If you are planning a move to Helsinki (or somewhere further north) then the weather proof is likely a better choice.

Not quite sure what your TIA refers to but this kind of report is all over the place, when we were testing tyres for production (although admittedly this was back in the mid 2000’s at the last time I was involved) the Chinese brands didn’t even get a look in due to manufacturing and design “features” most of which were missing!

In recent years, many Chinese tire manufacturers have come under attack for making substandard and unsafe tires available for sale in the United States. While there are many variations of Chinese import tires that have come under attack, companies that have been the subject of forced government recalls include:

All of these brands of cheap tires are made by the China-based Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Company; furthermore, it is alleged that these tires lack even the most basic of safety features such as gum strips which are a rubber feature that helps prevent steel belts inside the tire from separating or damaging the rubber.
While these 4 brands are definitely brands you should stay away from, many motor industry experts recommend staying away from Chinese brands altogether. While some Chinese-made tires are a little better than the brands mentioned above, most Chinese-imported tires lack safety and performance features such as belt stiffeners, bead wedges and nylon cap plies that are considered to be industry standards these days. In short, don't buy cheap, imported Chinese tires. Regards

Due to a sale at Tire-rack I bought Michelin's instead of Nokia's.

I am not certain that the Tire I bought can be purchased in the UK.

However this will give you an idea of what to look for in a tire to prevent excessive shoulder wear.

I expect this Tire to have excellent wet weather performance

I've had no issues with Continentals both winter and summer variants. Found them to be very good in terms of even wear and grip.
