Could always just swap a coil pack with another on the engine and see if it still flags up the original cylinder or flags the cylinder the possibly faulty pack has been changed to?

That would eliminate the coil pack as the issue. Regards

Hi David - thx for your reply - yep could do that but at $30 for a new coil (Bosch) I'll just put in the new one in the hope that I never have the problem again.... yep - bit of blind faith

Thanks for your reply. Yes I got to the bottom of it. It was a coil pack but there was confusion over the cylinder numbering. Most people were looking at the engine and thinking cylinder 1 was far left and they read left to right. Even the dealer thought this. So the front of the engine is on the right as you look from the front of the car. Replaced coil pack and all is well. However speaking t9 a couple of mechanics they say coil packs are becoming service items and as they are so cheap we should replace them every major service.

Clive - thx for your update. I changed the coil on cyl #3 (which I assumed was 3rd cyl from the LHS looking at the engine bay from the front of the car but have not had the chance to use the car much - so now I am a bit rattled.... have I actually changed the correct coil? - flipping LR, always complicate simple stuff) From your investigations any idea how to verify the cylinder numbering for the i4 petrol engine? Or does anyone else know?
