The whole balance shaft thing is a strange one, easy to say the oil dilution causes it, but it happens on the other models - velar xf xe etc.

Whatever the real reason for theses engine failures turns out to be it does nothing to defuse the ticking time bomb that Landrover ownership can often be |

Not brilliant, low to mid-20's according to the lie-o-meter. Then again, I'm only pootling about these days, not flying up and down the motorways, so can't really complain at that. I still hope for improvement over time. |

There is a really detailed thread and a post that an owner (former copper) produced, having spent months investigating this issue, I'll see if I can find it. In essence, there was an issue with the DPF coating (Johnson Mathey) on certain model years that was causing the problem, well, that and owners not driving them properly. You have to look at it realistically. They have sold over 100,000 of these in the UK alone, and whilst a small percentage have had problems, you don't hear about the other 99,500-odd who have had no problem whatsoever. https://www.discosportforums.co.uk/download/file.php?id=9800 |

Or the design team not listening to the engineers (which appears to be the consensus on that forum), backed up by penny-pinching accountants. Lose/lose |

The cynic in me suggests to myself that it was all part of a bigger picture to lure owners away from Dielsel altogether, and back into Petrol. But then again, with my sensible hat on, why would they have invested X £Bn at Wolverhampton if that were the case?

Not sure how it works at JLR but at Ford the design team for powertrain WERE the engineers, after designing something like that once it was proven then costing asked why it cost so much and needed cutting back, often it ended in something breaking/blowing up and going back to the original design and then the cost reduced in body or trim, after all it’s better to have a seat collapse after 100K miles than an engine blow up! ![]() I don’t know the ins and outs of that particular engine but it is entirely possible the design was outsourced. This is very possible, early launch with testing in a different platform could easily spell disaster, if packaging is an issue there really is not much they can do until a new installation can be engineered, as you say a software “fix” is a bit of a sticking plaster cure.
