Newbie - Power Loss Issue...

Hi folks,

I have just bought a manual 57 plate F2 and have a few questions - any advice would be welcome.

When I get up to speed and particularly uphill as I change into 4th there is a power loss and my speed reduces to about 40-45mph. There is 135k on the car and it was fsh until 99k (in 2015). I have read that old fuel filters can cause this type of thing and have also asked Freelander Specialist about this. Their answer was 'It sounds a little like it has gone into limp home mode. This can happen for any number of reasons, one of the common ones is a problem with the turbo boost actuator.' though I did forget to mention the fuel filter could be quite old...

Any thoughts before I buy a new fuel filter / actuator?

Also, here is a strange 'mod' on the fuel line on top of the engine (see photo attached) - I am wondering if this could be part of the reason for the power loss? There are plastic/rubber inserts which seem to reduce the diameter of the pipe by quite a bit.

Nothing like that on mine. It could be that someone was having problems bleeding the fuel system of air after a fuel filter change. Looks a right bodge to me.

Yeah, looks a bit naff to me too. Do you know if there is a part number for that pipe (I assume there is...) just wondering if it could be acting as a choke on fuel flow.

I'm just wondering if that pipe has been cut and re-joined to insert a priming device inline to prime/purge a replacement fuel filter.

I thought the F2 was self priming but happy to be wrong... Either way, I'm more concerned about the reduction in diameter. Might need to replace fuel filter and that pipe.

Looks like a clear piece of pipe inserted.

Are your symptoms not similar to a worn clutch? FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

You are wrong..they are not self priming! (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Thanks for that. So there must be a way of re-priming built in - but I can't find it in the manual.

I don't think it is a clutch issue at the moment - simply because it does not seem to happen when going downhill. I would have thought had the clutch been affected then it would happen all the time. 2004 TD4 Gone

Having had just this ie limp mode going up a hill it pointed at fuel starvation. A new fuel filter fixed the problem. A LR Assist guy once told me that some of the early fuel filters were too fine and prone to waxing up on very cold days at the beginning of winter when summer diesel (with less anti waxing agents) was used. This is unlikely in your case but I would start with the fuel filter. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Thanks for all the replies. I have checked the intercooler hoses and they seem okay - no splits that I can find - so have rdered a new fuel filter. Will sort that tomorrow and see if things are any better.

If not, Freelander Specialist suggested the tubo actuator - I'll give that a go next... 2004 TD4 Gone

AKB, in respect of your clutch comment, if the fly-wheel is slipping it will be most obvious in higher gears on uphill slopes around 2,000 revs. The fly-wheel problem appears to be quite common on elderly manual FL2s, mine’s been doing it for at least the last 50,000 miles and my driving style has adapted to suit. But you should notice it over-revving and not picking up speed, where I suspect what you are seeing is a drop or lag in revs despite you trying to accelerate. Fuel filter issues seem to be even more common and hopefully replacing yours will cure the fault. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Hi Worms, thanks for that - i am seeing revs drop and not over-revving so am hoping that it is the fuel filter. It will be having that changed today so fingers crossed... 2004 TD4 Gone

Just to chuck another parameter into the mix, potentially it could be a sticking Turbo Actuator arm. They have been known to stick under load, and will throw a similar code.
