Terrain Response System Failure

I know there have been a few posts on this subject but there does not appear to be a resolution as most people just take it to the dealer for a fix.

Went to get the car out of the garage (parked up previously with no issues) pressed start, car cracked over briefly then stopped ( assume this is to stop over cranking of starter motor) pressed start again and car started.
When it started there was a couple of beeps and the message " Terrain Response System Failure" was displayed and the light went out on the selector. No other issues such as ABS fault.
As I needed to go somewhere took the car out and all was well except no TRS.
In other posts people have suggested the following.
Low battery.......... Possible checked battery OK but put it on charge anyway......... Made no difference.
Disconnect battery and perform a system reset...........Tried this ..........Made no difference.
Possible ABS wheel sensor.......... Haven't checked yet but would this not throw up an ABS fault on the dash.
Possible ABS control unit............Have no way to check this but again would this not throw up an ABS fault on the dash display.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thumbs Up
I assume I can still drive it without causing any harm, just won't have TRS. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, have the extra earth strap, just forgot to mention that one in the post.

BUT HEAR IS THE UPDATE.
Messing about today fitting a TomTom satnav in the dash cubby hole, as shown in someone else's post, that went well.
Anyway went to try that, turned on ignition and Terrain Response System came back on and stayed on. Shocked

So decided to take the car for a drive to some rough tracks to try it out and all seems well. Thumbs Up
I have no idea what is going on can only assume gremlins in the system.
Keeping fingers crossed its working.

As a bonus newly installed satnav got me home. Laughing Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

With the temperature going down recently, I started getting low battery and other odd error messages including traction control failure.
As my battery is some 5 years old I decided to retire it and fit another. It seems to have cured the problem and 2 weeks later I am having no messages.
I did note though that it seemed to take a few days for the premature low battery messages to fade away (for example if I used the radio when engine off) - now OK. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Pleased to hear you're working again Gasman. I've had this problem for years, Terrain response system fault message on start up, then the light on the terrain sector knob goes out. Doesn't affect the car particularly but it's annoying.
I've done the earth strap fix which has improved the car, but not sorted this.
The workshop manual says the fault will be one of the systems that runs the terrain response system (ABS eg) rather than the terrain response system itself. So if I had time I'd replace the ABS sensors first I guess.
Any other advice very welcome. Thanks.

Gasman, mine is the same age and model as yours. I’ve had your error message on the dash twice (in two years of ownership) as a result of stalling in traffic followed by a rapid start to get moving again. I can’t remember if either time gave me a diagnostic error code, but if it did I cleared it with no recurrence. My assumption is that if it tries to start without sufficient boot-up time for all the computer wizardry, it just occasionally results in a start-up error. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Looks like its a hit and miss diagnosis then. Evil or Very Mad
Still can't see how the ABS sensors would affect it without throwing an ABS fault? Neutral
As long as its gone away I'm going to leave well alone for now but I appreciate everyone's input. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

It can be something as simple as the abs pump not reaching working pressure at the required point in the startup procedure due to low temperatures. It happens more regularly as the battery ages.

Last time it happened to me was in the usual summer traffic jam along the sea front at Sainte Maxime on the Cote D’Azur in June, so not exclusively a low temperature issue! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

That's brilliant …............we have a terrain response system that doesn't like the cold, so snow is out and doesn't like the heat, so sand is out. Rolling with laughter Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Doesn't like long grass either Shocked

Mine played up after driving across a field of long grass. Local indy couldn't find a fault but suspected it might have disturbed the Haldex connection. Taking it off and re-fixing seems to have cured it. driving on the right side

terrain system fault

The senser for air pressure flow .Situated at the front of the engine near side near radiater. Pull the connecter out and push it in again. This is on same circuit as terrain system. You may need to replace the senser. This cured the problem on my 2008 TDI 2.2. You can google it and their is a video showing how to do it
