I would start by replacing the steering reservoir which has a built in filter.

Would think pump noise would change dramatically as you turned the wheels when not moving. If so then go the Reservoir and fluid as per Dorsets post before going straight to pump |

ok thanks guys for the suggestions, much appreciated; the LR specialist that usually services it suggests it could be the steering rack but I'm not convinced however as the steering has not as yet become heavy or problematic I will continue to monitor it and when the weather improves go for a reservoir change. At least to start with... |
