Noisy Steering Pump - possibly!!!

Hi all,

My first post for quite awhile...and one for the LR mechanics amongst you...I'm looking for a bit of diagnostic advice please...

My 2007 FL2 HSE (<70K miles) has developed a very irritating high pitched noise from under the bonnet, which I suspect is coming from the steering pump. The steering is working ok, not heavy or tight in any way and the fluid level is correct, however the whining sound is always present now and changes pitch when the revs increase/decrease!

Anybody experienced similar?

Thoughts or ideas as to what the fix (assuming its the steering pump) might be other than simply to replace it?

Is this a relatively straightforward DIY job to do?

I would start by replacing the steering reservoir which has a built in filter.

Hmm, had issues with this myself over the years, 2 good places to start are:

First, check for stone/pebble wedged between the disk and backplate, I had this once and it caused a right racket.

Second, check the clearance between the backplate and the disk, I had an issued after wading (though I don't know why) the backplate had moved close to the disk and when turning to the right it was enough for the backplate to rub on the disk. Re forming the plate (bend it back a bit) did the trick.

Try driving slowly in a car park and go from lock to lock and see if it changes, also try gentle braking, may give you some pointers.

There may be others, but I always like to start with the cheap options before buying loads of bits.  MY2014 SD4 XS

Oh forgot to add:

Check alternator pulley, it has a needle roller bearing in it and makes a racket when it goes and is in the same area you give, just get a new pulley though, don't go splashing out on a new alternator.  MY2014 SD4 XS

Could it be A/C related?
do you have the air con on all the time? if so try it with it switched off.

Would think pump noise would change dramatically as you turned the wheels when not moving. If so then go the Reservoir and fluid as per Dorsets post before going straight to pump

ok thanks guys for the suggestions, much appreciated; the LR specialist that usually services it suggests it could be the steering rack but I'm not convinced however as the steering has not as yet become heavy or problematic I will continue to monitor it and when the weather improves go for a reservoir change. At least to start with... Rolling Eyes
