I will try and get a full service inc. haldex and see if that makes a difference. Have noticed noise occurs more after being off road on mud so perhaps it is related to haldex?

I have got the throttle hesitation problem which occurs at 1800-2000rpm where the power drops sharply in warm weather.

I've done a lot of investigation including replacing various parts (turbo, MAF, fuel filter etc) - these haven't solved the problem.

Eventually, I got some very useful information from this forum and from my Foxwell OBD reader, and I'm now convinced that the problem is caused by the EGR mapping.

I select the live data readings for 'Commanded EGR%' from the Foxwell so when the hesitation happens, the Commanded EGR% shoots from 0% to 60%, then back to 0%. If you read some of the web articles about diesel EGR, then 60% is the maximum value for EGR (i.e. you can't use 100% of recirculated exhaust gas - that would probably do some damage to the engine). So, because this happens at 1800-2000rpm, which is when you require a lot of torque and combustion, the EGR mapping must be wrong.

This is why the dealer 'software update' will probably fix it (because a better EGR mapping must be part of the update).

For instance, the EGR is set to 20% at motorway speed when you take your foot off the throttle. This is valid because it doesn't affect acceleration (it's off-throttle). So, when on-throttle at 1800-2000rpm in hot weather, the EGR should be maximum of, say, 5% (not max 60%). This is the basis of setting the correct mapping values for the EGR.

I have contacted several ECU mapping companies to ask about EGR mapping, but unfortunately, all they offer is to blank the EGR and remove it from the mapping software. This is not what I want. The mapping companies should know how to map the EGR and should offer it as part of their services.

For EGR mapping video, search Youtube for 'Optimizing EGR Operation using EcuTek ECU tuning software'. Note that this software isn't available for Land Rover, it's working example of how EGR mapping is done.

Does anyone know of a tuning company that will remap the EGR 'properly' in a way that fixes this hesitation problem?

Do you have an auto?
Because that 0-60% error could be the intake pressure dumping when changing gears...
Even if you change "manually", the algorithm is the same:
- it simulates an off-throttle - dumping moment
- change gear
- it simulates on-throttle, where turbo needs again time to build boost because of the previous dump
Hence the hesitation and various "turbo surging" sounds...

Yes, I have an auto, but it still happens even when I am in manual mode and not changing gear - it happens every time in all gears (I tested it in gears 1,2 and 3).

I used to think that it could be due to the gearbox because it happens when you think it should be changing gear, but putting it in manual mode made me think that it wasn't anything to do with the gear change.

Thanks for the information - if I can get my EGR remapped then I will be in a better position to say whether it has solved my problem. Until then, I'm not ruling out anyone else's advice/comments.

There's also the issue of it only happening in warmer temperatures (EGR reduces NOx gases by reducing combustion temperature).

^^^^^ if you read through all the articles on this forum about this problem , including LR response you will become slightly disappointed. Software updates do nothing to improve the situation, and neither will changing parts, as that for some reason gives a short lived reprieve sometimes. The only improvement I have found is to double dose with Redex on every tank full . Does that point to anything specific to the technically minded members.?

@shablamy, you do add to a full tank, it’s a brand name of a diesel fuel system cleaner , that may not be available in SA. Any brand would do the same job , it’s just that Redex is the oldest established brand, a bit like calling a vacuum cleaner a Hoover .

Is this hesitation at low rpm between 14-1900rpm more contagious than the new variant of COVID 19?

My gen 4 2011 auto diesel started the same game as the threads above. I have felt minor episodes which sorted themselves out and vanished so nothing to stress about. Then the post lock down caravan escape to enjoy and contribute to the traffic ques of Great Britain brought it back, big time! Hot day, stop start traffic. The car has done very little work prior to this trip out.

So, freelander specialist.com and a long chat with Norbert, the Freelander guru in Norfolk suggested a build up of crap on the turbo vanes, exhaust side and partial build up of the deposits impacting upon the smooth operation of the link arm. Quoted for a new turbo which I am reluctant to do yet as it pulls like an express train through the rev range.

Accelerator pedal change will be the next try.
Note: return home journey pulling 3500rpm -4000rpm when towing for a prolonged stretches the car behaved much better. Theory, turbo gets proper hot and some of the crap burns off? Confused

I hate to sound negative but if you read through the various threads you will find that despite lots of attempts at diagnosis no fix has been found for the 2011 model with DPF hesitation problem. it tends to come up every year as the weather warms up. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Don’t waste your money on any throttle pedal or turbo, it will not cure the problem, I have no idea what the cause is as my car has done it from the moment it had its first service at 4000 miles. I have found the better diesel or double dose of Redex fuel cleaner on every tank help a lot , but are not a complete cure . See my other posts on this subject going back years .

The hesitation that I experience in warm weather on a light throttle at low engine speeds fitted the known problem of 'Gearbox Flare' with the Aisin Warner Auto gearbox.

It started each spring and got better each autumn with my 2011 model year SD4. My present Metro does not have the problem.

As you can see from the following link it was a gearbox problem and not a LR one.
