When I was in Kenya last week I noticed that a lot of safari vehicles (usually Toyota) are equipped with two spares on the back plus sand ladders, high lift jacks, snorkels and a big radio aerial etc. One of the local guys reckoned that it's largely to impress the tourists that get flown in to their "high end" campsites and go on organised safaris. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Surely they would have to comply with latest regulations? 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200 |

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the regulation came in about 15 years ago so that manufacturers could continue making existing car designs but that new models would have to have the door mounted spare removed. Hence in 2006 when the first FL2s appeared they had to have internal spares. This was apparently one factor in the demise of the Defender. There are a few other issues such as lifting the rear wheel off and on to chest height which is a challenge for most people and also issues with weight distribution, difficulty with rear doors with top hinges carrying the weight and vehicle dynamics. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The Ford Eco sport only came out around 2013 or so and had a rear mounted spare when first launched and the latest 2019 all new Suzuki Jimny still has a door mounted spare. |

I always thought that the rear door mounted spare wheels disappeared because a) they made the rear door too heavy and damaged the hinge mounts and/or b) the change in design requirements to have an upward opening boot door which in LR/RR case was designed to shield us from rain when sitting on the rear sill hence the boot seat accessory you can add now to certain models. |

I agree with RogB re the rear mounted spare - I don't believe there is any legislation against it, after all the new Jimny and G Wagon (it is new despite appearances) as does the latest Jeep Wrangler all have the spare mounted on the back.

In Kenya I never went anywhere without two spares and often needed both. In the 110 that was bonnet and rear-door and my old RR had two internal mountings, one each side. In fact the 110 originally had had two internal mountings installed (the theory being that external wheels get knicked) but they transmitted far too much chassis movement through the bodywork and it was shaking all the rivets loose! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto Previously: 2010 MY FL2 TD4e GS - Now gone at 199,500 miles, about 135,000 of them mine. ‘93 Defender 110 200TDi CSW ‘87 Defender 90 4 cyl Petrol ‘83 110 CSW V8 - best ever! The new setup will be similar to Suzuki with 2 spare wheels on top!

Well I have searched around and can't find any reference to legislation about not putting the rear spare on the door but I definitely remember reading about it in an EU journal years ago when I was buying FL1s so perhaps it was never implemented. I must say that the last time I had a puncture was in an FL1 but I still had to empty the boot as the tools were under the boot floor! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Re the spare on the door , does it not stem from American legislation that when the boot is open you must be able to see the cars rear lights? Do it now ! Your a long time dead !! |

Interesting point but when you opened the rear door on an FL1 the door stopped half way so that you could still see the rear lights. You then had to push it further to open fully, thereby taking responsibility for obscuring the light on one side. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

2018 Shogun still has spare on the rear tailgate so I don't think there can be UK legislation preventing it. Of course the twits that thought up the Disco Sport felt that their premium brand customers would not need such a mundane thing as a spare…… .. |

Disco sport has a spare, or at least has the option for one. In fact back in 2010 my Fl2 didn’t come with a spare, not just modern LRs.
