"Induction rattle" - Where to start?

I guess this is not an easy case to diagnose over the web, but I try anyway Smile

Lately, my 2.2 has developed a noise which is best described as "induction rattle" which occur around 1000-1200 RPM`s. The noise is not dependent on engine load at all so it is there while revving at stationary and when driving. I had a friend looking under the bonnet while revving, and he claims that the sound is from around the timing belt cover/ducting hose towards the turbo.

So the big question, has anybody have had any similar experience and able to put me in the correct direction to solve this issue?

Could be the timing chain (the one between the two camshafts) and its tensioner.

Thanks, That is a good guess Smile

I have searched a bit around and a worn crankshaft pulley also seems common. Worn alternator pulley and AUX belt tensioner has also been suggested. I guess I just have to start to remove some covers....

Worn alternator pulley will give you excessive movement on the auxiliary belt tensioner and indeed the tensioner will make noise.

Did some checking today. Removed the AUX belt and started up. no noise. Alternator pulley seems to be seized as it has no one-way function. Tensioner and idler pulleys seemed OK but I have just placed an order for new alternator+ tensioner+ idler pulley and belt. I guess this will do the trick Smile
