I had a similar experience with a Citroen C Crosser - a cracking car to drive, but cost a packet in repairs - anyhow the DMF started playing up - cost £1500 to get done - issues continued when I got the car back as the DMF had lunch the main gear box bearing which in turn had stuffed the 2nd/4th layshaft - as the running gear is all Mitsubishi evo10 the cost of a gearbox strip is£4000 to start (parts on top) according to Team Valley gearbox services (as it is a combined gearbox & transfer unit with all the fancy torque allocation stuff in it....) so the C crosser went the journey - shame as it was a cracker to drive - really fast & mint drifting in snow.... |

it seems like landrover / rangerover ownership is a case of enjoying the good bits and considering the odd vibrations and failures as character - a bit like trying to run an old Moto Guzzi - well maybe not - an old Guzzi is loud, proud and obnoxious - not really what you might say about a landdrover (far more discreet) - the bit I meant is it shakes and moans whilst it does it's good thing & you accept that there are many many bikes out there which can do the same thing without the odd breakdown, many oil leaks, odd electrical gremlin & drive shaft failure - but when you get where you're going it's on a Guzzi (or in your/our case a Landrover....)

as we used to say in the telecoms design world at Marconi .... its a feature not a fault |

has anyone tried replacing the torque converter? after some digging on the internet about this problem and talking to a bunch of mechanics (some of them LR specialists) I have ruled out most of the variables except one, the torque converter.

I tried changing the torque converter on mine - days and days I struggled manfully to attend to this important issue - ultimately failed as my car is manual....... |

Hi Guys, just an update, I've fitted a new power steering reservoir and replaced the hydrolic oil but still getting the vibration, I've also removed the fuse for the heldex unit like Tim had done but it's still vibrating, when I tried this first time it didn't seem to be vibration but I don't think I took it on a long enough run, my mechanic seems to think that it could be a drive shaft, I would have thought that if it was the front drive shaft it would cause vibration though the steering wheel which I don't get. Dose any no if you can remove the propshaft live you can on the freelander 1?

I think you can remove the prop - that's essentially what Landrover did to get the 2 wheel E version - don't think that will give you an answer as all drive shafts will still be rotating

It's not the tyres as I do a lot of millage and I'm on my third set, presently I think it's an electrical fault that's causing this issue, I have read on the Internet that a clogged inlet manifold can cause these issues, Dose anyone no if this is correct, |

Well I keep changing my mind from transmission to engine related on this ....I’m now going to try find somewhere that will be able to lift car up and run it through all gears while suspended and hope to goodness it shows up something like a wobbling shaft or joint or something resonating . Will update when this is achieved |

if the inlet manifold is clogged you will suffer no power, huge plumes of black smoke and engine warning light on as MAF will show a lack of air - car won't run with blocked inlet manifold - if Diesel rail is blocked no fuel, so no start & if individual injectors blocked rough running - so maybe doubtful on the vibes from that |

Ok so today I have had car off the ground and the mrs sat “driving” at different speeds and me closely inspecting everything that is rotating ,she was pretty good at maintaining 1800-2000 rpm and I think I may be on to something as at that very rpm the passenger side cv joint at the gearbox end seemed to make a clattering type noise . I have noticed there is quite a lot of up and down movement where the shaft goes into gearbox ie whatever the shaft sits in as opposed to the actual cv joint . Maybe at said rpm (slight load) this is flopping about and resonating through box to rest of drivetrain but I would think if it is worn that much surely the oil seal would have worn out and I would have a leak ? Jase although yours is manual you could have a check tim . |
