Hi all,

After gleaning a lot of useful info from this site and subsequently purchasing a FL2 I thought I had best introduce myself.

The FL2 is the first Land Rover I have owned, although in the distant past I spent a lot of time at the wheel of military versions. Overcoming the "poor quality and reliability" label associated with LR was the biggest barrier to purchase for me, especially as two friends had a succession of ongoing problems with Discovery 2 models, both opting for Toyota 4x4s as (trouble free) replacements rather than new Discos. Having a reliable vehicle is a necessary requirement of my work, so lets hope the FL2 can at least match the record of the vehicle it replaces which covered the best part of 50K miles in two years and apart from scheduled servicing and tyres only required a replacement number plate bulb. Four previous Subarus in the family have also been faultless.

I opted for a late '07 car to get the benefits of first year depreciation done and teething troubles sorted (I hope Neutral ) together with the ongoing two years of warranty - just in case. The GS spec offered all I needed, the SE spec offered all I would have liked, but an XS with extras (like full leather and body trim upgrades) made a good compromise at the right price. The FL2 will be used for long distance business trips/commutes, a limited amount of work and leisure off-roading and some 'van tugging. I opted for the manual gearbox in the interests of fuel economy considering the balance of intended use.

Final justification, if I follow the political masters wishes and put some money into the economy I would prefer to buy British!

In use the car is a real pleasure to drive and be a passenger in, confirming the impressions of the test drives. A good match for the image and quality of many a German made alternative.

On a practical note:
The FL2 rear bumper and Alco tow hitch friction lever (vertical when hooking up) don't have a lot of clearance if you have the LR detachable towbar, just a few mm.

Great tow car too, I have the SE manual in Stornaway Grey and find it easy to tow etc

Regarding tow hitch, I opted for a fixed bar and they have to insert a 25mm spacer which you can see in the picture below,

Thanks for the welcome.

I suspected the fixed tow bar might restrict the departure angle a bit but hadn't considered it as a second stage HDC Surprised Always something to learn here it seems.

Why the 25mm spacer bar?

I have the same factory fitted tow bar and Al-Ko tow ball, no spacer, and use the Al-Ko 2400 stabiliser on an Avondale Dart 470/2.

No problems with operating the Al-Ko lever or with any tight turns.

Originally there was a 20mm spacer, only because I gave it to the garage with the Al-Ko ball from my FL1 to fit instead of the LR ball.

Later I removed the spacer as the tow ball seemed to protrude a long way out at the back. (Just ready for CG to trip over).

npicks, did you keep using the LR tow ball or did you swap it over to the alco towball?

Hi, newbie to the forum and potentially to a F2. Currently own one of the first Freelander 2.0 XEDis. Had it from new (ex dem) 9 years ago and its been a fantastic vehicle. Wasn't intending to change just yet as it just keeps plodding on but with prices as they are we are looking at 2007 F2 SE and HSE models. Want a bit of info/advice on that so will bob a seperate thread up.
Nice forum - I've had a good read and gleaned some excellent info from different sections. Particularly the sticky on armrests if we go for an SE as thats something I'd def want. Thumbs Up

After few weeks on your useful forum, I decide to introduce myself.
I'm a happy FL2 owner from 10 months.
It's my first LR, and my first 4x4, thought i've been driving defender and disco (1st model) for some years as firefigther volunteer.
I'm sure i'll enjoy this forum.
