Yes they, prob a mil at a guess. Is this a problem / possible cause you think?

They can contribute to the noise if the pads are touching the discs dont know if you can get them skimmed or just get new discs and pads Thumbs Up

Just a thought.

Have you trying bedding them in properly- this is an important area that is often over looked . It can cause a variety of vibrations and noises - often incorrectly attributed to warped disks

EBC Brakes says: "After full width contact band is attained make a further 10 stops from 60 mph to 10 mph in succession with a deliberate attempt to get the brakes hot. Some smells may occur even slight smoke during this final heat up stage of the pads in early life. Then coast the vehicle for a mile to allow discs to cool. Do not pull up and park vehicle with brake excessively hot. You must try to get the discs down to below 60-80 degrees C temperature before parking the vehicle."

The really important point id to get the disks very hot (so you can smell the brakes) so a smooth band of pad material is transferred into the disk and then allow it to cool down without the disk stopping (else uneven pad material transfer will occur again). Jules

yes it is primarily for new brakes but is also worth doing for brakes that develop vibration/noises where the pads have plenty of live in them still. If you're driving doesnt get the brakes hot very often then uneven layers of pad material can occur. The "bedding-in" process is supposed to correct this unevenness. Jules

Thanks Geoffsnook, and for anyone else wondering in the search section found this....

Front, new 28mm. minimum 26mm.
Rear, new 20mm. minimum 18mm.

suppose I need one of those tools now to measure thickness or has somebody got a tip up their sleeve ?? Thumbs Up If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Use a micrometer - some allow you to get around the lip on the disk




Others (like mine) need two small flat pieces of packing (Ive got a couple of fridge magnets of know thickness)

Make a simple measuring gauge from a bit of stiff cardboard. Cut a notch in it 28mm wide and use that to measure the thickness of the front discs and a 20mm notch to measure the rears.It it is a slack fit repeat with a 26mm and 18mm notch to judge how much they have worn, Remember though that any lip on the disc will give you a false measurement so you may have to cut a little angle on the notch to clear any lip which should be minimal on a good disc anyway. 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Galway Green

This is interesting, a month ago, I fitted new discs , & genuine Land Rover pads to the fronts, pads were supplied by Matford Land Rover, & more or less from day 1, they've squealed away, but intermittently!

I've had the brakes apart three times, applied copper grease to more contact areas than I ever thought would need to, & they still squeal every now & again!

Mentioned it to dealer when I was in last week getting a service & MOT, & the report back was, they may just need cleaning?

However, since they jet washed it off, the squeal has got less, but now seems to squeal when reversing! & not so much driving?

Any thoughts? Should I contact Matford to see if they'll supply a new set? Could there be a fault with the ones supplied?

My Freelander friends,

For my 2008 with the 3.2 I did the following for the front brakes

Note: my brakes were squeaking and dragging slightly

1. New pins

3. High temperature silicone grease (for the pins so that they move freely in the bushings)

4. EBC green stuff pads

After completing the items listed above I still felt that it wasn't as good as new.

So I removed the calipers and I cleaned the pistons using fresh brake fluid.

When it was all done the piston could be moved by using my hands, no tools required to seat it.

Now its as good as new.
