Steering issue?

Hi all, unfortunately I had to re-register as my attempt to register failed and I didn't get a new password reset... Sorry! Previously "Gapster".

I have a 2007 manual which has recently broken down due to a front wishbone bolt shearing off - quite unusual, and a pain to get fixed.

It is now in the garage with a new drive shaft, new wishbone, new front shock mounting plateand new a new set of tyres for the geometry to be set correctly. All done, geometry is correct, but there is something wrong when the car is test driven. Essentially the car pulls to the right, AND to the left when under acceleration. Normally, when the car pulls to one side only it is known as "torque steer' which indicates the geometry is out. This is unusual as it can pulls both ways with nothing being consistant, sometimes left, sometimes right and the same when hands are taken off the steering wheel- drift left, or drift right. It is worse under acceleration...

Anyone have a clue about this? It has now been in the garage for 4weeks. This garage seem to think it could be electronical, maybe a sensor, and an accumulative error as I could have a dead ecu unit under the bonnet - the abs/hdc/special functions have not worked since last winter.

You can get steering issues from the rear suspension. Have you had the rear suspension checked ? Have you tried with Haldex fuse removed ? Jules

Never heard of rear suspension cause the front steering to 'torque steer', it is unlikely to have the effect that I am getting.

I have mentioned disconnecting anything related to the front drive: haldex, wheel sensors. Yet to hear anything as he was checking out option yesterday evening.

Right in the poo now with winter and only one 4x4 Sad

Worn motor and or transmission mounts can sometimes cause the torque steer feeling. Give them a good look over.

If the Haldex isn't working at all, ie you are in front wheel drive only, you will get torque steer under hard acceleration, the software on a FL2 ensures you wont get torque steer by transferring power to the rear wheels my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Up until the breakdown there was no issue with the Haldex or 4-wheel drive. I guess it could be accumalative error from other parts that have decided to break down at the same time...

Now you have me thinking...when I had a problem with the rear diff (bearing went 2 weeks after purchase) Bell engineeering advised me to pull the fuse for the Haldex to eliminate any further damage/problems whilst I waited for a recondition diff from him.

I drove the car back from Belgium, and for 2 weeks after with no steering issue whatsoever- all in two wheel drive.

You need to go back to the initial problem. Why did a wishbone bolt “shear off”? This does not just “happen”. Something serious going on here.

Very interesting - could the Haldex be adding input and causing push or drag from the rear?

As I said rear suspension can cause steering problems: if you apply a force from the rear which is unequal across the rear wheels the car will veer off. As an example I had a RWD BMW which whilst at a constant speed drove in a straight line but upon acceleration moved to one side and to the other upon lifting off. It wasnt "intense" but was sorted by checking all bushes for wear and a very thorough 4 wheel alignment from a performance car suspension specialist.
Yes I know the FL2 is not a performance RWD car but I guess all things have to be considered when faced with a problem not easily solved. Jules

"new front shock mounting plate" why was this necessary ? and would you not do both sides to keep the geometry symmetrical? - can anyone answer that ? Jules

To much toe out for the front axle.
Which increases slightly (normal to a point) when accelerating.

Yes, that's what I Think. My only choice now is to take it to the stealers and hopefully get is sorted once and for all. So many things gone wrong with this metallic pile of poo that it needs a comprehensive check by the 'specialists' Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
