Think i have spotted the problem maybe, it seems that oil is/has been dripping down on to the exhaust ( the part that comes from the turbo that runs along the back of the engine ) not sure if its what has leaked from the air intake because of the rebreather pipe, or if i have another oil leak some where, so will try giving it all another clean at some point and see if it happens again, but it seems when the aircon is running the fan pushes the smoke up the back of the engine which is odd but all i can come up with at the moment

Hi all

Not sure if this is related but the freelanders engine light come on with system fault then the engine was a pig, so called rac out and it seems that my egr valve is shot, from there computer it has stuck open and stuck closed and also chucked more amps to the thing to make it move. The guy reset the faults but as soon as its re scaned the fault shows up right away again, looks to be a pig of a thing to change also Sad

Alex, if you read this post. Can you disconnect the EGR electrics plug and fit a blanking plate?

Well after FOUR phone calls today with the first 3 not even being returned! I finally got to talk to someone, all they said ""it was fine when it left"", to which my dad said when he picked it up the ( I ) was on the screen, so either they are talking out of there bum or its broken on the 3 mile drive home Shocked They said that it had been out for a test drive and all was great.

They also failed to fit the new updated glow plug module while it was there because after fitting the new one it didn't even work! so had to be taken back out and the old crap one put back in Neutral Not happy to be honest with LR at the moment because they have failed to get anything right.

This morning when I started it, engine fault come up and the engine light was on, drove like it did before they had fitted the new EGR valve

Just back from LR after a 2 hour wait, they plugged in and 4 EGR faults were picked up, they took off the software and put it back on and unplugged some things. Drove ok on the way home so hopefully fixed now Rolling Eyes Saying that though there is a random noise when you pull away almost like gear box or something, seems todo it when its changing gear from maybe 2nd to 3rd, wasn't there before they changed this EGR valve

On there customer care though, rocked up got told it wasn't anything they had done and the EGR worked perfect, then 2 hours later they admitted the reader found 4 EGR faults, well done LR good job there lol Thumbs Up

Will try it again later and see if its still working

With the auto you will get a sort of "sigh" from the box at each gearchange. Especially when you accelerate at more than a casual rate. It's a "characteristic" Rolling Eyes

This is not that sound Bob, seems to only happen down on lower gears and when pushing maybe 25% of the throttle, might just be something they have done in the software, or have messed something else up Neutral Will see how it goes, as it still does not feel as good as it did before. Also noticing that if you push very light throttle at say 20 mph it seems to flutter on the revs abit, does not seem to hold at that speed very well as it feels like its confused, but that might be the EGR and ECU learning?

Its got to go back for a day over the next few weeks so they can try to fit for the Second time the recall item for the heater thing

Not sure if its a factory recall but when the freelander was dropped off they said it had to have a new heater thing fitted which has flagged up on there computer, basically would not give it back with out the new part being fitted, to which they fitted the brand new part and it did not work Laughing So they refitted the old part and have now ordered a replacement, so it has to go back again for this to be fitted. The dash has to be taken apart to fit this item and they said it was a 5 to 6 hour job done on warrenty

Ok now I am shocked at the **** service from LR Main dealer Censored Truck again feels like it did before, phoned the main dealer back up to be told yes we can book it back in at £100 plus vat to have another diagnostic done

I had a problem, phoned the RAC out who did a scan and found egr faults on both open and close and a third fault because the egr valve was trying to use to many amps ( i.e the valve was stuck and it tried to move it ) Phoned LR to get it booked in to fix the problem, it went in and they fixed the egr problem, my dad picked the truck up and it ran like Censored on the 4 mile drive home with faults showing up, I then phoned LR and got told it will have to come back in for a diagnostic report, so it went back in on Saturday morning where I sat for 2.5 hours while they so called tried to fix it again, I was told 4 egr faults were again showing so they reprogrammed the egr again and cleared the faults, then they test drove it and said we think its ok now so drive it around and see how it goes and if its not fixed rebook it back in Shocked So today I phoned them up and was told oh you will have to pay another £100 plus vat to have it diagnosed again before they will do anything else = what the hell LR.

Taking it to a indy to get a second opinion plus diagnostic report and if it comes back as EGR at fault LR will be getting a letter from my solicitors Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

Might as well keep you upto date with LRs cock ups Laughing

Engine light and engine fault came on, on the way to work on Monday and the thing felt like crap again, phoned LR got told aload of bull as normal, then got told to bring it back in, so lunch time Tuesday it went back in, they found yet more EGR faults and I picked the keys up earlier for it but I couldn't collect so will be later on. Problems were EGR valve faulty and did not work Evil or Very Mad So they have replaced it for the second time and now so im told the freelander 2 is all fine Rolling Eyes

So they tried and failed to fit a recall item which I now know to be for the heater system ( the thing that helps warm the heater/air up faster in the cab ) Basically they fitted one and it didn't work out the box, so put the old one back in ( so im told ) Which has now been booked back in to have redone.

They tried to fit a brand new EGR valve which as you have guessed it was also broken from the box... and have now fitted a second brand new EGR valve

IF you want a working brand new part these days then please don't think LR will have it, or at the very least ask how many of that part they have in stock before booking in Laughing Thumbs Up

Dan, I notice you have a MY 07 model - ie getting on for 8 years old. My experience of LR dealers, admittedly going back a few years now, is that they usually only deal with cars up to 3-4 years old. As they often have a fairly high staff turnover, this means they know not much about older vehicles. Also, because they are used to dealing with new car warranty issues, they have no incentive to save you money and just keep banging in the new parts until it works (or not). I suspect that an indy expert, who is likely to deal mainly with older models, may have a better idea.
That said, I have come to insist on Genuine parts. I've had a few bad experiences with people fitting inferior lookalikes. I have also had to prompt repairers with info from forums once they have admitted to being stuck! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Hi Everyone,

I am having a similar smoke issue, also coming from the left back of the engine, where the turbo sucks in the air. I have changed already the plastic intake pipe (organ tubes) and clean the engine from oil thouroughly.
The smoke is only visible if i force the car a little bit, if after i stop and open the bonnet, kind of exhaust fumes are coming out from the back of the engine. It is not happening with normal use, only if i the engine is forced.

I have cleanded the engine bay, used it for a while and checked it again: some oil is visible on the bottom of the oil tank, but the turbo housing ans the back of the engine are totally dry.

Can it be my crankshaft seal leaking, leading to burning oil on hot engine?
Or what can it be, which is causing smoke only after forcing?

Any ideas can help!
Pal
