Dealer untruths HELP.

HI all, just been and bought a HSE very nice to be back Very Happy BUT...on the windscreen was one price and dealership said 'oh we'll cut that down etc etc etc BUT when I got back home and looked to see if car had been removed or said sold and noticed it was a few grand lower priced than what they had on forecourt so really haven't knocked off even though I was a cash buyer.
Lovely car and really enjoyed the test drive.
Any advice appreciated as I have paid a deposit and signed ! so am i knackered even though they had one web price and another forecourt price ? If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Caveat Emptor is the key

Depending on how you intend to finance the purchase you may have a statutory cooling off period - personally I'd let the Dealer know you have rumbled their pricing game and tell them unless you get the lowest price they can put the car where the sun don't shine!
Trading Standards may be interersted in what you have to say
Although it may seem like the only car for you there will be plenty of others - walk away rather than be cheated - it will just eat away at you and spoil the experience. No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

you shouldn't lose your deposit and you should get it at the lower price, take a screenshot or print out of the online ad in with you.
You have the right to cancel the agreement within a cooling off period regardless of how you pay.

If you really like that particular car, and the dealer will adjust your figures to the lower advertised price then all's well.

If they wont, then get your deposit back and walk away, plenty more available.

I have heard this happening before...''Yes Sir but that's a special internet price''....... they aren't selling a virtual car FFS !!

This practice may be common. The car we just bought had a sticker price just over 900 on the internet price.

If you do a search on the car you may be able to track the prior prices. It may be advertised on several sites, Some sites don't update or else the seller forgets which sites it has been advertised on and doesn't update.

How much more than the web price did you end up paying? Being a cash buyer these days doesn`t give you a lot of bargaining power as most places want you to take some sort of finance deal and buying cash can result in you actually paying more for a car than you could get it for if you had taken finance. It's an interesting game is selling used cars (or new ones for that matter) for a living. I wonder if the sellers actually have bought the cars themselves

Unless you buy a car unseen under the " distance selling legislation " , you do not have a ( cash purchse ) " cooling off " period. If you are buying cash after viewing , a deposit is just that a prepayment on an agreed contract . The price on anything is still I believe ( and I'm sure the Doc will correct me if I'm wrong ) , nothing other than " an invitation to treat " . It does not oblige the seller to sell at the advertised price . As there has been "offer and acceptance " between you and the garage the contract is probably binding. Bumping up forecourt prices is common so that they can offer " great " trade in prices.

The main thing is do you feel happy with the price you paid for the car?

As far as the lower internet price went , if someone took that price in printed out they would probably just given a lower trade in price
As a cash customer you are probably ( as I've found out myself ) an anomalie in their day to day business.

Having said all that I'd still be banging on the sales managers desk demanding some form of reduction . Thumbs Up 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

interesting comments MartynB, my eyes get opened daily on the stunts some businesses pull.

But as he says, I guess if your happy with the price you paid and the effective cost to change ........ if you hadn't seen the internet price how would you feel, happy with the deal? or not ?

and I would second the 'hammer on the sales managers desk' ethos (in a polite, firm but unthreatening manner of course Very Happy )

I could have got another Freelander close to home for the same price with a pile of extras. But I wanted white & light coloured seats that don't burn your arse. This was the only other petrol engine one I could find 300 km away, before they all disappeared. One could say I paid too much but I got the key things I wanted. Still very happy! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Quite right there RogB, thought about it and if I hadn't looked that night I would still be well happy at getting the car I wanted , left the dealership thinking I done well here so..............................

Probably the right way of thinking about it Jules BUT remember the answer is always NO unless you ask the question.
