Scenario - the other day I was launching my boat. It weighs about 800kg plus it's trailer, both attached to the LR. I was on a slipway which was covered in green slime, so much so that I couldn't stand up on it without sliding into the water unless I held on to the landie. Launching wasn't too bad, but recovering was stressful due to the slipperiness of the slope - there was no traction between the tyres and tarmac. Eventually I had to get a backup tow from a tractor to avoid sliding off the edge and into the drink.

So my question is simple - what's the best setting (sand, mud, grass, DSC on / off etc) for this situation?

And yes, I know proper offroad tyres would have helped, as would a higher tide, "proper" landrover, crane, skyhook, etc etc...

Grass/snow I suspect, and as you suggest possibly coarser tyres

Command shift and you'll be in 2nd gear
Rev steadily and do not back off if a wheel spins, the Terrain response will kick in and take over getting drive to the other wheels, if you back off it will not do its stuff correctly, the magic happens around 1800 rpm from memory.

At 1800 rpm in second gear my manual would have a burnt out the clutch I guess. Had they kept building them for another year I would have had that auto. Robbed.  FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Off road tyres would have been no better and probably offered less traction

agree with Mudstuck, doesn't matter what gear you were in or what setting you use if the tyres can't get a grip.
I found one of the worst surfaces when off roading was wet grass. Common sense isn't very common.

I'm sorry but this is incorrect!
Would only be correct if the car from stationary slide backwards into the water......therefore there is some traction and being in the correct setting as Taz pointed out that allows some wheel spin so that the terrain response can redirect power to wheels which are not slipping. It's the basis behind the whole system and DSC would be beneficial to be turned off as later models tell you on the driver configure screen. MY15

Put it in front of the tyres, the same as they do with trains, it will do the trick. Chuck a few kgs in a bag as ballast in the boat & use it for traction if needed. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

That's 130mph tyres for you,mine would walk across that without spinning a wheel but I wouldn't do 130mph on my tyres even if a f2 could do that

Sometimes the launching slip can be just too slippy, no TR setting can help when there is no traction at all

I lower the boat bown to the water with a rope from trailer to tow bar 2008 xs
