I asked the garage round the corner if they would replace a bulb for me (to save a trip into Cambridge to buy one!) and they said they won't do it because the non-Genuine bulbs from their supplier don't last. Are you using Genuine LR parts? If not, that may be the answer. However it seems odd that all the lights should go out when bulbs blow. Sounds more like an electrical fault to me. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Depends how the blow? If the two supporting wires touch and short out then it's lights out, nothing unusual there.
What is unusual though is the exploding capsule, yes it happens but shouldn't, although there are many threads on here with similar issues.
A voltage check wouldn't go amiss though, a faulty regulator on the alternator will have them popping Thumbs Up

Headlight out

Hi
I have a 2014 Freelander SE Tech SD4 and I noticed last night the passenger side headlight has stopped working on both dip and full beam, all other lights and sidelights are working fine.
Can anyone advise where to start to check whats wrong as I am only used to the old fashioned bulb check

A single bulb filament provides both high and low beam on your model. A shutter hides part of he light output when on dip. You should be able to hear this move with the engine off and ignition on, lights on and switch between dip and high. Older car bulbs would have two different elements for high and low beam, so high would work if dip element failed.

Bulbs are dead easy to change on the Freelander.

Gav.

No not checked the bulb is this easy to do ?
As both dip and full beam were out I assumed it was something else, didnt know both fail with the bulb unlike the old normal headlight bulbs which have seperate dip and full beam

As you can't see the bulb whilst it's in the light unit you may as well get a spare one before you start, so if the bulb has gone you can change it at the same time. The book is ok on how to do this.

If you go to Half***s to get one be aware that they may say you need a normal H4 or something. If your car has halogens it will be a HB3 as LRNut says.

Two points:
Although the bulb is dead easy to change, how to do it is NOT obvious (believe me - I've watched a professional make a mess of it). READ THE INSTRUCTIONS in the handbook and it's simple.
My local garage refuse to fit bulbs except Genuine Land Rover parts. They say the others don't last. Although some on here are happy to fit Halfords bulbs.

Also, check whether you have halogens or xenons. Halogen are the normal fit, xenon are the deluxe version with very white light and self-levelling. You probably have halogens. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

careful with some halfords bulbs, the extra bright ones ( the blue painted ones) are a mite bit too long and catch on the shutter.when they go they explode and the glass fragments can jam the shutter. I had this happen twice till i realized and went back to the standard bulbs
