A big thank you to Austen who replaced my diff and serviced the Haldex unit yesterday. What a pleasure it was driving back home after he had completed the work in a once more quiet Freelander. All done while I waited, I was tempted to try the local ale, but needed to drive home !!!
The Diff nose bearing went on the return from the South of France - climbing into the Massif Central there was a sort of hesitation as though something had boundup - but there was no real noise at 80mph initially, it became noticable as a "turbine" like noise between 25 and 50mph. I tried different wheels/tyres, but still noisy, checked the wheel bearings - OK. So concluded the Diff nose bearing. Austen demonstrated to me the failed bearing in the removed diff - I got the diagnosis right. He also serviced the Haldex with clean fluid, new filter and a clean of the unit.
Top man and excellent value for money.

- LR001193 - Propshaft Bolt M8 x45mm Flange Type Connection - Qty 6
- LR003137 - rear axle oil
- LR003156 - rear diff oil

two days and 50 miles after, it starts to develop the same vibration noise coming from the rear ... I don't know what to think

Do you have any idea ?

They still don't know what's going on with my FL2

The Freelander 2 is booked in for a service next week. It's 7 years old and been serviced every year ,latterly by good independents ( my cat could have done a better job than the **** main dealer we bought it from and used for service while it was under warranty ). Now with 50,000 miles on the clock in the 5 years and 17000 miles we have owned it we have had the steering rack replaced ( with LR 50% contribution) , a major electrical wobble, and now it sounds like the rear diff bearing is on the way out. It truely is a woeful piece of thrown together junk. As it only gets used for about 3000 miles a year I will get a the diff overhauled when it goes in to the ( independant ) garage. The cost is still better than the depreciation on a replacement given the low miles used per annum.

Turned round at Addingham Bob, the heavens opened, i wish i'd stayed and found a pub though.

I got home and had to "hand ball" 2 tonnes of dry stone walling off of a trailer, then load 2 tonnes of logs as a back load, all in the rain. Then spent the afternoon trying to coax another couple of days work out of a 15 year old McCulloch chainsaw. It was serviced last week but just not up to the hammer it has had in the last few days and it will just not stay in tune(Probably designed by the LandRover Differential Department ) .Still it was a Machine Mart no warranty "mail order return" for £80 all those years back so it owes me nothing. . I'm currently browsing looking at buying a Stihl: proper German tackle

At that speed, the Haldex is completely disconnected, so you can say it's a front wheel drive car, with a long propshaft rotating on its own, without purpose.
I remember that on later models, before Haldex, at the end of the propshaft, they added a mass vibration dampener - some sort of big, round mass. Just for reducing vibrations.

In other order of ideas, I too have similar vibrations, but from third gear up, on each gear, when the torque converter is locking at certain RPM (around 1750) and therefore it's a pure mechanical connection between engine and wheels and the RPM is, for a short period, in a too low range area for conditions.

Thanks Alex, I don't have this problem anymore .. self solved .....

The reason they changed the haldex is that the car developed rear vibrations and juddering when half or full lock.

When I got it back, everything was Ok for 50 miles and after, it starts to make the same thing ans this time also in reverse .
