South Africa 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 S Manual Izmir Blue

I'm fairly sure my diff has just gone bang. I was coming home last night on the highway, cruise control on @130km/h. All of a sudden there was a violent vibration which went away for a few seconds then a Big Bang followed by a constant knocking sound. Pulled over and found the right hand driveshaft broken. The inner cv was still in place however the boot and tripod were gone. Cv boot clamp from the left side also gone.

I drove home with the knocking...no other option. I got a second hand shaft today which I fitted in the car. Drove it carefully in the garden but could feel something not right. Removed the driveshaft again.

I will remove the broken shaft from the outer cv tomorrow, refit the cv to hold the hub together and drive to work where I will be removing the diff and attempting a complete bearing replacement session! I will be servicing the Haldex at the same time.

The strange thing is there was no diff noise at all..car on 260000 Kms. I'll take some pics as I go along and post them here

You could always drill and tap the flat spot on the bottom of the diff, you know the one that looks like the manufacturer designed for a drain plug before the bean counters said "no don't do that it might cost 50p per unit".
Then fit a drain plug, and change the oil and drain any metallic contamination, every service Very Happy

Then you will need another drain plug - fill and drain plugs shown.

It's less than 700miles to bell engineering, make a weekend of it and try some of the local beer Very Happy

You know it makes sense.

Ha, ha, ha... I've done the same many times. Last time I flew back to UK on a Thursday to by a Disco, arranged to view some Horse boxes Friday, ready to drive back with both Saturday morning.

Everthing went tits-up on the Thursday night but stiil managed to complete the mission for a Saturday return Smile

I have no real problem with the distance, just a matter of working out the cheapest/most practical solution. Only dead fish go with the flow

If anyone is interested, reports in the FT say that Haldex is likely to be bought by gearbox make ZF Does anyone know what gearboxes LR uses?

German car parts supplier ZF has solidified its chances of acquiring Swedish brake systems group Haldex, increasing its offer yet again just hours after a rival suitor upped the ante.

ZF had sweetened its bid from SEK100 to SEK 110 just two days ago, matching an offer earlier this month from Munich-based braking system group Knorr-Bremse AG,

Austen has already written a quick 'how to' for removing thr Haldex - excellent!

Does anyone who has removed the rear diff at home have a 'how to' for removing the rear diff?

I will be doing it on my own in the barn so could do with any tips people may have?

Ie.

Does the rear diff and Haldex come out as one unit?
Do I need any special tools?
Do I need any extra gaskets/seals?
Is there anything specific I should be careful of when dismounting/fitting?
If the Haldex & Diff CAN be fitted as a whole unit, can I simply fill up the Haldex before it goes on, then top it up after priming?

Ahhhh Landy ownership! I was hoping to regain my weekends usually spent underneath the Discos but alas no...🙄😳😂😂 Only dead fish go with the flow

Hi sorry for delay

1. Remove 2 X 10mm on bolts holding rear exhaust box chassis on drivers side (passenger side in France)
2. Slide exhaust rubbers of both sides of the exhaust box, exhaust will now hang down, support with straps.
3. Remove 6 x torx head prop bolts, then shock prop flange with hammer and big chisel to dislodge prop flange from input shaft of haldex. Unplug larger haldex plug from loom, use a small flat ended screwdriver and twist in the gap between plug and button, this should release it.
4. Remove 4 X 10mm bolts on bottom of diff hanger to diff
5. Support diff
6. Loosen 18mm bolt on diff hanger bracket on drivers side a couple of turns (passenger side in France). Remove opposite side 18mm bolt. Hanger will now swing down.
7. Remove 2x15mm bolts from rear of diff through rear subframe
8. Lower diff slightly, unplug breather pipes.
9. Lower further and slide backwards until driverside (passenger in France) drive shaft touches exhaust, now pull out this driveshaft, it will just come out.
10. Lower diff further, looking at remaining drive shaft at 11 o'clock , ontp of the diff castings a hole, you can putba strong screwdriver or drift into there and pop the drive shaft out.
11. Remove haldex 4x10mm bolts

Fitting is complete reversal www.bellengineering.co.uk
