Just to add to Austen_fl2 instructions..
I would support the drive shafts when disconnected rather than letting them drop down..

Finally sorted out the French control technique (MOT) so will be cracking on with this soon. What a palaver that was.

As the car is up on rear ramps, and 'chocked'at the front I will need to lift a front wheel up to turn the prop shaft allowing access to all 6 of the (E11) Torx nuts. Not a problem.

Will I need to turn the rear wheels when I remove/refit to make it easier ti get the shafts out/back in the Diff? If so I'll rethink my lifting options.

Are there any final tips for the job?

* Never used to be so keen to ask questions but don't have the same 'mechanical aptitude' or memory since I had a TIA a couple of years ago Rolling Eyes

So......

The answer is 'Yes', I will need to be able to turn the rear wheels to line up the splines when I refit. I will have to think of something safe & secure using axle stands for the refit Shocked Only dead fish go with the flow

Finally got this damn thing off, and thanks to Austen managed to get both drive shafts out..... Shocked

Took me a long afternoon just to get it off, five hours, but as with most things I would be quicker next time.
Hardest bits were getting the propshaft bolts off, and getting the drive shafts out- last shaft was a real pain. I vuess ot would be a lot easier on a proper lift ramp.

Now supping a cold beer and will attempt to service the Haldex, attach to replacemét Diff, and reassamble tomorrow afternoon.

I am advised that taking the motor off a Haldex 3 is not a good idea as bits are likely to break?

Now trying to find all the torque settings for the refit Cool Only dead fish go with the flow

Dreaded rear diff question

Hi everyone, as per the title, i have a droning sound from the rear that gets louder and quieter by speed alone and not by road surface, i have been told it is a faulty rear diff, my question is, how safe is it to drive the vehicle with a failing/faulty rear diff
thank you Smile

Talk to Austen at Bell Engineering - he is the expert on FL2 diff problems. And of course the various fixes.

I have merged threads into this one, please try and keep ongoing diff issues here and it will make it easier to search and keep all the useful info in one place.

Hi Austen, yes same tyres front and rear.

rear diff changed at 20 000 miles.
vibration noise on half or full lock at 40 000 miles --> Haldex unit changed
few miles after, same noise --> another Haldex unit fitted cause the first one just changed was faulty

1000 miles after, I start noticing vibrations on half or full lock... Sad

I did about a 600 mile round trip to Scotland and back, including driving round whilst there, with a dodgy bearing. It didn't get any worse whilst I was there. It was replaced a few days after I got home. Mine would only make a noise when there was no power going to it, I.E. when coasting to a stop, or going down hill.

On the advice of Austen (Bell Engineering) I removed the fuse for the Haldex when my Diff started to whine. I was in Belgium at the time do had another 800kms to drive with the problem. I think it keeps the car in 2wheel drive and reduces the risk of further transmission issues. Only dead fish go with the flow
